Telus and Norton Launch Scam Protection for Calls, Texts and Email

Telus is now including a Norton-powered scam blocker called Telus Scam Protection with its new mobility data plans, covering calls, texts and email from inside the My Telus app. The carrier announced it today, October 20, and says it’s the first Canadian provider to put this kind of protection on every new data plan.
If you sign up for a new data plan, it’s included at no extra cost. Existing customers can switch to an eligible plan or keep their current one and add Scam Protection for $3 per month, which is about one fancy coffee and a lot less than one fake Canada Post text can cost you.
What Telus Scam Protection does
You turn it on once in the My Telus app and it runs in the background after that. There are four parts:
- Safe Call blocks calls identified as scams and labels incoming calls as scam, spam or a verified business.
- Safe SMS checks texts and MMS from unknown senders and adds a warning label to anything that looks like a scam or phishing attempt. Nothing gets deleted, so the message stays in your messaging app.
- Safe Email scans the inbox on your phone and labels likely scams, phishing emails and fake invoices. You can connect up to five supported email accounts.
- AI Scam Assistant is a 24/7 chat assistant you can ask about anything that looks off. You can paste text or upload screenshots of messages from iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook Messenger for a second opinion.
“As digital scams become increasingly sophisticated, I’m hearing from our customers, as well as my own friends and family that it’s becoming harder to tell the difference between a legitimate message and a bad actor,” said Dan Quick, Vice-President of Mobility Solutions at Telus, in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Tuesday.
What iPhone users should know
According to Telus’ support page, Scam Protection works on iPhones and iPads running the current version of iOS or either of the two previous ones, plus Android 10 or later. On iOS, texts from saved contacts aren’t reviewed, and some dashboard stats for Safe Call, Safe SMS and Safe Email aren’t available. Talk and Text plans don’t qualify.
Your phone can also only run one call-screening or caller ID app at a time, so if you already use something like NordVPN’s scam blocker, you’ll have to pick one. Since iOS already filters unknown senders and can silence unknown callers, the email scanning and the scam assistant are probably the parts iPhone owners will notice most.
Why carriers keep adding scam tools
Canadians reported more than $704 million in fraud losses in 2025 across more than 112,000 reports to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and the centre estimates only 5 to 10 per cent of fraud actually gets reported. Scams and phishing also made up 29 per cent of SMS spam complaints sent to the CRTC’s Spam Reporting Centre between October 2025 and March 2026.
This isn’t Telus’ first Norton product, since the two already offer a paid Online Security plan together. Earlier this month, Telus also joined Rogers and Bell in teaming up with banks to fight fraud, while a phone-return scam on Vancouver Island has already cost victims more than $33,000.
Would you turn on Telus Scam Protection, or are you sticking with the iPhone’s built-in filters?
