Apple Music’s New Logo Was Built Using Sound Waves

Apple Music is shaking up its visual identity with a major rebrand that turns music into something you can see. The streaming service has unveiled a brand-new logo and design system crafted in collaboration with acclaimed British electronic music producer Fred Again.

Rather than relying entirely on standard digital graphic design, Apple Music’s new logo was physically shaped by sound waves captured on camera.

The creation process relied on a unique practical setup rather than computer-generated imagery. The production team collaborated with Fred Again to compose a specific set of musical notes and a new sonic mnemonic for the platform. These audio frequencies were then played through a specialized rig connected to a tank filled with mineral oil, where an Apple Music logo had been etched into the glass floor.

When the notes played, a transducer caused vibrations that sent the oil rippling outward across the tank, physically distorting and shaping the visual appearance of the logo in real time. The entire process was filmed completely in-camera. The resulting footage is now being used to create short introductory video stings, promotional clips, and overlays for concert videos and platform content.

Alongside the sound-formed visual assets, the streaming service introduced a redesigned wordmark. The word “music” is now written entirely in lowercase letters, moving away from Apple’s traditional in-house corporate font toward a heavier, rounder, and more tightly spaced typeface.

The updated look has also started appearing across beta software builds and promotional channels, signaling a wider rollout for listeners across various devices.
