Google Brings Gemini and Personal Intelligence to Android Auto
Google is expanding the reach of its AI assistant by bringing Gemini directly to vehicles around the world. The tech giant has announced that Gemini is now rolling out globally on Android Auto and in vehicles equipped with Google built-in.
Along with this rollout, Google is introducing a new feature called Personal Intelligence. This capability allows the AI assistant to securely connect information across the Google applications people already use every day.
With your permission, Gemini can tap into Workspace apps like Gmail and Google Calendar, alongside Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and regular Search queries, allowing it to provide uniquely tailored answers right from the driver’s seat.
Traditional voice assistants in vehicles often require rigid voice commands or lack deeper context, forcing drivers to pull over and look up information manually. Personal Intelligence is designed to solve this problem by handling complex requests and reasoning across multiple data sources simultaneously.
For example, if you are heading to the airport, you can simply ask the assistant for your flight gate and whether your flight is on time without having to hunt through confirmation emails or run separate web searches. The system also helps drivers find locations or pull up details from past activities without scrolling through their phones.
Google has designed Personal Intelligence so that user apps are never connected automatically. Drivers must explicitly choose to opt in and turn the feature on, and they retain the ability to disable it at any time through their Gemini settings. Furthermore, vehicles with Google built-in will only share personal responses when the driver is inside the car with their phone securely connected.
The update is rolling out for eligible personal Google accounts globally, bringing advanced conversational AI straight to the dashboard to make driving more convenient.
