yellowsn0w 0.9.6 Released: It Works This Time!

Here’s an update on the iPhone 3G software unlock front: yellowsn0w 0.9.6 has been released in Cydia and…it works! After testing out the initial release on how to unlock your iPhone 3G and the subsequent updates, this latest release has been much improved.

Here are the steps I followed in order to get outgoing calls with my Rogers SIM and get foreign SIM cards to read in my iPhone 3G:

1. Installed yellowsn0w via Cydia (with my Rogers SIM inside).
2. Rebooted my iPhone. Tested outgoing calls–success finally!
3. Popped out Rogers SIM and inserted a du SIM and Fido SIM. Did not reboot as both SIM cards were able to register signals with Rogers.

Every situation maybe be unique and different when it comes to yellowsn0w, so that is why the Dev Team is asking everyone to submit their feedback so they can improve yellowsn0w. They updated their blog and provided a following glimpse of what changed with this release:

Although ultimately the payload is the same as in the very first beta, we’ve changed the way that it’s injected into the baseband.

What about the future of yellowsn0w (aside from working with all SIM cards)?

The “permanent” unlock is still the ultimate goal for some of us. We’d like to break the chain of trust a bit earlier in the boot process (if only for the fun in trying).

Once again, kudos to the Dev Team for their incredible work with this software unlock. I still can’t believe how easy it has become to unlock an iPhone 3G compared to old days of hacking with a first gen. Say good bye to those nerve-wracking nights!

I will be trying this later today. I found with the first unlock it didn’t work at all. Tried with the 2nd update and it worked at first (tried both rogers & fido sims) then it stopped working????!!!! – I’ll try this latest update this morning!

So let’s get practical.

I”m going to the states for 10 days. What do I do if I unlock it? Am I constantly swapping SIM cards? I suppose this is a pretty simple question but I’m not sure I understand how this works beyond unlocking it.

You purchase a new card for your destination country, and then use that card when in that country. When you get back, you put the original card back in. That’s the extent of the card swapping.

when you buy simm cards do they have a limited amount of talk time, with a local phone number, for that country, and if I do that, can I get my phone calls from my original number ?

That’s usually how it works. You get a ‘local number’ for the country you’re in. If someone calls your regular number, the phone won’t respond. I presume that the caller will get dumped to your voice mail, but I haven’t tried it yet with the iphone specifically.

What is meant by ” permanent” unlock?

A permanent unlock would mean you only have to run yellowsn0w once. After that, the unlock stays forever!

Unlocking is to use your iPhone more cost effectively in another country; you just need to jailbrake. There is a video app, but I am unaware of a way to send photos via Txt on the iPhone.

Successfully unlocked Rogers 16GB iPhone 3G with Fido SIM (well… I guess I should say I think it’s unlocked, since Rogers now owns Fido) with yellowsn0w 0.96.

Now some sad news… my backup failed and I got restored to 21 Dec.’08… is there any way to check when the last successful backup was? {Apologies, don’t mean to hijack this thread.}

anyone notice ‘Searching’ when you first turn your phone on? Don’t remember seeing that before the unlock but perhaps I never noticed it before. I always remember seeing the ‘ROGERS’ name right away.

are there any downsides to unlocking the iPhone? for example, can we still get iPhone updates from apple and do our downloaded apps still work? sorry for the silly question, but it sounds to good to be true!!

also, assuming that one doesn’t take the unlocked phone in for service, is there anyway fido/rogers will know the phone is unlocked?

thanks in advance for your time!

I was stuck with baseband 02.30.03 for 5 months now because I did upgrade using itunes. But as of today (23rd May 2009) all that has change and I am now recieving service. what I did was I downloaded Fuzzyband downgrader 1.0 via cydia and installed it. Then I downloaded yellown0w 0.9.8 via cydia and installed then reboot my ipone and that’s all. Is working very well, I am amase. much thanks to the Dev team once again.
