Rogers Media and CBC have announced a new 7-year sub-licensing agreement for Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) and Stanley Cup playoff English broadcasts, starting in the 2019-2020 season.
The new deal lasts until the end of the 2025-26 season, when Rogers Media and the NHL’s 12-year broadcast rights deal expires.
Rogers says the new agreement means Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts will continue to reach Canadians on Saturday night on CBC, Sportsnet and City. Also, HNIC broadcasts will continue to be available on the CBC Sports app, CBC TV app, on the web at CBCSports.ca, Rogers NHL LIVE and Sportsnet NOW.
“CBC has been an excellent partner over the years and we are excited to extend our relationship,” said Rick Brace, President, Rogers Media, in a press release.
“HNIC on Saturday nights is something Canadians have come to cherish and we’re thrilled that this long-standing tradition will continue for many years to come,” said Hubert T. Lacroix, President and CEO, CBC-Radio-Canada, in a statement.
Nationally-televised regular season games will continue to be broadcast on Saturday night, including all rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Rogers says Sportsnet will “continue to produce the games, retain all editorial control, and manage the advertising, with games continuing to be produced from Sportsnet’s Hockey Central Studio at the CBC building in Toronto.”
This season, HNIC has been the most-watched program in the country every Saturday night, seeing 18 million Canadians tune in, about half the population in Canada.

I’m surprised I thought Rogers wouldn’t renew and take it over for themselves. I hope part of the deal is to put Bob Cole back on Leaf games. I can’t stand Jim Hughston.
