According to a PEW Internet survey in the US about text messaging, it was revealed 73% of American adults with cellphones send text messages.
Young adults are the most avid texters by a wide margin. Cell owners between the ages of 18 and 24 exchange an average of 109.5 messages on a normal day—that works out to more than 3,200 texts per month—and the typical or median cell owner in this age group sends or receives 50 messages per day (or 1500 messages per month).
In a media response to this survey, Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall told the Vancouver Sun Canadians send 8 billion texts per month, or roughly 267 million per day. With 24 million adult Canadians, that is roughly on par with the median of 10 texts per day from American adults.
Back in August, the CWTA mentioned 18 billion text messages are sent per month in Canada, according to Q1 data. With this updated number from Telus, that would equate to an already staggering increase to 24 billion text messages per month.
It was also revealed smartphone adoption is on the rise, as Telus noted 42% of their customers use smartphones, up 25% from a year ago (Q2).
