Telus-owned Koodo is planning to shake up its wireless plans, as next week the carrier will make unlimited province-wide minutes the standard, and turn unlimited Canada-wide calling into a $5/month add-on for new customers.

The change will follow a similar move from Telus prepaid brand Public Mobile earlier this week, as the latter debuted province-wide minutes and turned Canada-wide calling into a $5 add-on.

Koodo will make the rate plan changes on Tuesday, February 23, confirmed Telus in an email to iPhone in Canada. The company said new plan changes were coming to “provide customers more choice, flexibility, and opportunities to save.”

The following examples were provided of the upcoming changes for new customers:

  • $50/3GB Tab Plan – unlimited province-wide calling and Canada-wide text
  • $45/3GB BYOD – unlimited province-wide calling and Canada-wide text
  • Optional: $5/month for unlimited Canada-wide calling and international text

You’ll notice bring your own device (BYOD) and Tab plans are also changing in price, no longer aligned as they currently stand on Koodo’s website. BYOD plans will be $5/month cheaper says the company.

The Koodo spokesperson added, “we heard from customers that they wanted more choice and flexibility when selecting specific features, and that Canada-wide calling was not a service everyone needs built into their plans.”

The company confirmed existing or renewing customers are not affected by these changes, as long as they stick to their current plan.

All of Koodo’s plans right now include unlimited Canada-wide calling and unlimited international messaging, which will soon become a $5/month add-on for new customers. It remains to be seen if Rogers’ Fido and Bell’s Virgin will follow suit and also make Canada-wide calling a $5/month extra.
