Apple Has Licensed TomTom Maps and Related Information in iOS 6

TomTom has confirmed it has partnered with Apple to license its maps, as noted in a short (really short) press release:

TomTom (AEX:TOM2) has signed a global agreement with Apple® for maps and related information. No further details of the agreement will be provided.

With the introduction of the new Maps app in iOS 6, Apple has removed Google Maps. According to sources, we’ve been told the new Maps app clearly mentions TomTom as its source for map data (and even Statistics Canada in the ‘Others’ section).

Apple debuted the Maps app has over 100 million business listings, turn-by-turn directions and a 3D flyover view. Laters, Google Maps (I do miss you though, Street View).

currently testing iOS 6 and by far the Maps App is the worse part of it all..

worse UI, poor POIs, no building names, no transit information, no building outlines, no public footpaths

Here’s a side by side comparison : https://twitter.com/corxo/status/212314131590692864/photo/1/large

Nice. I have been using the TomTom app for a long time. Be cool to have it built in, natively.

Agreed. I have the TOM TOM app on my phone already so I can trust the source.

I’m sure Cydia will carry some form of Google maps or you can probably do the same by accessing the website. This is a step back for Apple products but a step forward in their vision to fight Google.

this will be head and shoulders better than what is currently in the maps app in iOS 5. I guarantee that google will release a gMaps app anyway so I don’t see anything but gains here.

Personally I like the look of it but, admittantly, I haven’t used it yet. One thing I DO know is that I won’t judge it in comparison to google maps until I have a non beta in my hands.

The new Maps App blows. Suggested route to CN tower 4.5 hours through Kitchener from Grimsby! WTF? Looked up home depot in Burlington. It wants me to get on QEW from Plains RD …samll problem no entrance to the highway where it indicates 🙂 I know it’s still beta but have “some” serious work to do 🙂 I want google maps back!
