Apple Unveils iCloud Storage Pricing for Canada and More

This afternoon, Apple has unveiled its pricing for iCloud storage, as noted by 9to5Mac. For iOS 5 beta testers, if you navigate within iCloud settings to “Buy More Storage”, it will reveal the Canadian pricing scheme:

5 GB – Free

Upgrade options (adds to your 5GB):

10GB – $20/year (15GB total)
20GB – $40/year (25GB total)
50GB – $100/year (55GB total)

In the fine print below, a message reads:

Contact Apple for a full refund within 15 days of an upgrade or within 45 days after a yearly payment. Partial refunds are available where required by law.

iCloud backs up your iOS device, ranging from email, to photos, and more. It is set to debut this Fall as announced by Apple.

As usual, Apple is charging a premium over other services.
Microsoft SkyDrive has 25GB free.
Google Document has 1GB free, with only $5/yr upgrade for 20GB.
Amazon has 5GB free, with $20/yr upgrade for additional 20GB.

But if your songs, photos are stored isn’t that going to use lots of data?  Are we all going to also pay more to increase our data plans with our carriers? Rogers doesn’t have an unlimited data plan yet.  I hope someone has an answer for this.

Photos in Photo Stream won’t count towards your 5GB free iCloud storage. The last 1000 photos will be kept for 30 days.

It’s funny how used the word “yet” I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for any of the big 3 to release an unlimited data plan anytime soon. It may come one day as more and more things are moving to digital distribution, but we are definitely talking years at the bare minimum. Canada is one of the worst places in the world for cell phone features/rates. We get less than most countries and pay way more to top it all off, talk about rubbing salt in an open wound.

All music and apps do not count twoards the data limit, as long as you bought them through iTunes, for a small fee you can also have icloud scan your music then offers free iTunes downloads of all songs in your library to any device source: 2011 keynote
