Google Drive to Launch Next Week with 5GB of Free Storage to Rival Dropbox [Update]
We’ve long heard whispers of free online storage being offered by Google, but now The Next Web is reporting a free service is set to launch next week. Google Drive will offer 5GB of free online storage, and would set to rival Dropbox (which currently offers 2GB of free online storage) primarily and even attempt to put a dent into Apple’s iCloud:
The short story? 5 GB of storage, and it launches next week, likely on Tuesday at http://drive.google.com
Now let’s talk details. It’s no surprise that it will roll out for free. What’s interesting though is that Google is planning to start everyone with 5 GB of storage. Of course you can buy more, but that trumps Dropbox’s 2 GB that is included with every account.
Google Drive is set to work in desktop folders on both Mac and Windows, just like Dropbox. Another free storage option, and this time it is from Google. Their product launches seem to always have some sort of kinks (think: Google Plus, Gmail for iOS, etc) so let’s hope Google Drive comes as advertised.
It was revealed last year that back in the Winter of 2009, the founders of Dropbox turned down a ‘nine digit offer’ from Steve Jobs and Apple.
What would make you want to switch away from Dropbox and use Google Drive instead? Does it come down to a trust issue of Google versus Dropbox, or integration with your devices (ie iOS devices, Mac/PC, etc)?
Update 1: TechCrunch has also gotten their hands on the Mac version of Google Drive, but it is unable to connect to Google at this time.

I have 27.5GB free from DropBox through various offers. Other people have more due to the edu referral incentive. Google better have some killer app feature before I switch over.

Everyone in the class sign up under each other no doubt. Some how everyone working off each other to get beat the system.
Install the software on a lab or virtual machine something that is not your primary system.
How did you manage to get people to sign up through your referrals without appearing to annoying/a spammer?
You can probably create a bunch of email accounts and refer each of them.
Nope, tried that. They have to install the application for each email. And the app detects your IP address.
So unless you want to go to a bunch of different computers this won’t work.
Any other ideas are welcome!
You can very easily change your dynamic IP. Although it may require re-installing the app each time.

I don’t have any cloud service right now, but my Gmail is
full, so I need an alternative pretty quickly.
I wouldn’t want to have to keep referring people; I don’t have that kind
of patience or time. If Google offers
more free space than the competition in addition to cross compatibility, I
would get Google Drive. Actually, my DVR I had with 55 hours of HD
recording time kept filling up and our family would fight over who would have
to delete their recordings. Now that I
have the Hopper whole-home DVR from my employer, DISH, I don’t have to delete
since it has 150 hours of HD recording time.
Now we don’t fight, which is a relief.
I do need a cloud service though, so if Google doesn’t come out soon, I’m
going with the Box.
