How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Beta Without a Developer Account

Warning: the following info is for educational purposes only. Use at your own risk, we are not responsible.

It appears a loophole has been discovered by a clever developer to install iOS 5 beta on your iPhone without a developer account. As per Gizmodo:

Download and Install iOS 5

1. Download the iOS 5 IPSW file from the web (it’s easy and readily available. Just Google it and torrent it down).
2. Update your iPhone using iTunes. To do this, connect your iPhone to your computer, click on the Check for Update button with theOption (Mac) or Shift (PC) key pressed. Select the iOS 5 IPSW file from the place you downloaded it to.
3. Wait until it upgrades. A new activation screen will appear.

Activate iOS 5

1. Triple click the home button. This will activate the Voice Over.
2. Triple click the home button and Emergency Call will appear.
3. Click on Emergency Call and, while it’s switching, swipe with your three fingers down.
4. The Notification Center will appear!
5. Click on the Weather widget. The Weather app will load.
6. Click on the home button to exit to the iPhone’s springboard.

We haven’t verified this, but it’s a very interesting workaround I never thought could happen. If you dare to try this, let us know how it works for you. It’s noted that Apple can easily shut down this loophole and render your iPhone useless, so be warned.

But you would need to do this with every iOS 5 beta update right? And what would happen if Apple fixes this method? Restore to 4.x? Hope you backed up your shsh!

There’s one at Gizmodo.

This is a very risky workaround, and I’m sure Apple could impose its will on unauthorized devices. It might be fun to ‘test’ on a secondary device just for kicks though.

I got half way without realizing it. Switching back to 4.3.3 I’ll try again later maybe.

Hope you like your new Apple Brick.  You can’t go back once you update the O/S. I’m a Developer and I can’t even go back and I updated to iOS 5 the legal way.  Still, I know someone’s going to try this so let us know how it goes.  *snicker*

I’m getting really tempted to just shell $99 for a developer account to get access to this. It’s like spending $99 for pretty much a new phone, and there’s just so many new things in this upgrade.

It’s working but you need to do it each time you reboot the phone. It does not seems to be fully functionnal. For instance, I could not see the tab in safari nor the new notification center, even after 2 test emails.

After the initial setup was over, and a day later things are running very
smoothly.

Tabs in Safari are iPad only I believe.

Not on my work’s test iPhone, no.  I have them saved on my personal phone though.  I have no idea how to use them to restore my iPhone to a previous O/S though.  Can’t seem to find a decent tutorial for that.

How does this relate to your baseband? Do you lose your unlock?
