iOS 5 to Offer ‘Send to Twitter’ Option for Pictures Stored on iPhone?

With today’s Apple press release announcing Steve Jobs as the keynote speaker of next week’s WWDC, along with the announcement of iOS 5 and iCloud, expect more rumours to come our way. The latest involves twitter integration into iOS 5, in particular with pictures.

TechCrunch claims sources have told them iOS 5 will include native twitter integration into iOS, with the ability to upload pictures from your Photo Album straight to twitter (using their upcoming picture service):

We’ve heard from multiple sources that Twitter is likely to have a big-time partner for such a service: Apple. Specifically, we’re hearing that Apple’s new iOS 5 will come with an option to share images to Twitter baked into the OS. This would be similar to the way you can currently share videos on YouTube with one click in iOS. Obviously, a user would have to enable this feature by logging in with their Twitter credentials in iOS. There would then be a “Send to Twitter” option for pictures stored on your device.

After reading MG Siegler’s story, John Gruber had this to say:

So close to the bigger story, but yet so far. Imagine what else the system could provide if your Twitter account was a system-level service.

System-level access for twitter? That would be a huge step, but it would also be Apple choosing sides in the social network war. What about the others? There have been previous rumours mentioning the integration of social networks such as Foursquare, uStream, and Facebook in iOS. Could we expect this in iOS 5? Bring it!

I know this would take more then just Apples doing, but i would really love to see a send to FaceBook option that i have been missing on iPhones. it a much used feature on my Android and BlackBerries, i often find myself looking for the option on my iPhone by mistake once in a while 😛

I wonder if native Twitter integration in the iOS system will result in more integration options for third-party developers.  We could see some interesting apps emerge if that’s the case.

Facebook is the most famous of all the social networking sites. I wonder why apple didn’t select them when developing iOS 5?
