We all know by now that the iPhone Dev Team does some amazing work. For example, just last week they updated the jailbreaking tools QuickPwn and PwnageTool to jailbreak the latest 2.2 firmware. Some more interesting news is coming your way because one of their members has ported Linux onto the iPhone 3G!

Devteam member planetbeing has done a phenomenal job reverse engineering Apple’s hardware drivers and now for the first time ever, linux is available on the iPhone and first-gen iPods.

Wow, that is really cool! I don’t fully understand what’s going on but it would be really cool to use other OSs on the iPhone. It would be sweet to have Windows Media Player, etc. in the future. The more options we have, the better right? Great job dev team!

The best thing about Linux is that it doesn’t take up NEARLY the space that a regular operating OS does, though I don’t remember how big the iPhone OS is… Anyway, that’s really interesting because as was already said, this will open up the hardware to a whole slew of new possibilities!

I give credit to the developers but right now it is very useless without drivers like touchscreen, sound, etc. I cant wait for further development! 🙂

Meh I guess it’s something for geeks to be excited about. Personally as an average user, bar one or two missing features, I’m quite happy with the phone the way it is and don’t really have the time to investigate stuff like this.

A great proof of concept. Yes it’s useless right now, but a lot of innovation comes from open source. It’s also nice to see people doing what they want with “Their hardware”. I’m so tired of everything be closed and customers being told they cannot do what they want with their own hardware. I haven’t jail broken mine, but I think it’s great people can tinker with their stuff.
