After visiting New York City last month, I was able to visit the iconic 5th Ave Apple Store in Manhattan. Too bad it was covered in white since it’s currently undergoing a $6.7 million dollar renovation. Still, the store is open 24 hours and was screaming busy inside.
Apple recently updated customers of its intention to replace the existing 90 panes of glass that make up the cube–with only 15. Today, Gothamist received a render from Apple of what the store will look like after the renovation is completed in November, and from the outside it looks stunning, almost invisible.

The inspiration for the reduction in glass comes from Apple’s successful launch of their stunning Pudong Apple Store in China, as iFoAppleStore notes:
The Pudong retail store’s 40-foot tall glass cylinder design in Shanghai (China) was the motivation to create larger glass panels. The manufacturing techniques that a Chinese company developed led to the Fifth Avenue cube replacement design.
I can’t wait to see the finished 5th Ave Apple Store. It’ll continue to reign as king of the most photographed landmark in New York City.
