Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS Sold Out Nationally

Did you pick up your iPhone 3GS on the launch weekend? If so, well done because stock of the device is practically sold out everywhere!

Picture7

As of this week, many Rogers/Fido outlets nationally are completely sold out of their iPhone 3GS stock in both capacities, so if you were planning on picking up the iPhone 3GS in the next little while, you may be out of luck. While there are a few stores that still have remaining stock of the iPhone 3GS, many are completely sold out. Apple Store however are fully stocked, as expected.

Soldout

On the iPhone 3G side of things, many stores still have plenty of stock of both the 8GB and 16GB models and those will continue to be sold until stock is depleted.

While the iPhone 3GS will likely be back at proper stock levels beginning the second week of July, the iPhone 3G stock will not be replenished once current stock is sold out.

If you are looking to get an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS from Rogers or Fido in the near future, I recommend calling a few stores ahead of time and maybe even trying to get them to hold a device for you.

Were you among the first to get your iPhone 3GS on the launch day/weekend?

They won’t run out of 8GB 3G’s. The 8GB 3G is still in the current product line, and likely will be until the next iPhone launch as the low end model. If your iPhone breaks, and they determine the flaw is covered under warranty, they will send you a replacement iPhone, which will be either brand new or refurbished, not used.

And this is the real reason why Rogers didn’t offer a decent upgrade price to those who bought the 3G last year. Rogers knew they could sell those 3GS’ to new subscribers, extend the contracts of 3G owners who were willing to buy it at a premium, or pay outrageous amounts for no-contract pricing. It doesn’t pay to offer decent value to existing customers, and the corporate suits know it.

Now, I hate Rogers as much as the next guy, but they in fact were offering a better deal for existing customers than new ones.

Basically, the deal was you would get the 3 year contract price, same as anyone new, without even having HUP eligibility, provided you had the had a Rogers iPhone purchased before November, had any data plan, and paid an average of $100 / mo before taxes on your monthly bill.

On top of that, people were finding they screwed up and essentially included the cost of the iPhone in the monthly bill. iPhones costed between $200 and $350 depending on the type and your voice plan price, so that’s between $18.18/mo and $43/mo after taking the cost of the phone and dividing it over the months depending on which phone you got and how much it was, which means you really only needed maximum $81.82 (8GB iPhone at $200 for 11 months) to qualify for the full $500 subsidy. And even if you didn’t get that, having data plan alone gave you a $250 subsidy.

This is also a good way for Rogers to get around the 30 day price drop guarantee or whatever they did last year. If they aren’t getting anymore until 30 days after the launch, by the time they get enough stockpiled to feel they need a price drop it will be 3 or 4 months since the release date.

Existing 3G customer here. Got their last 32 GB white from one of the Futureshops in Richmond, BC on launch week-end.

Rogers website still getting hammered big time so salesman couldn’t log in. Had to manually fill out all paperwork. Didn’t pay anything at the store – was told the purchase would appear on my next Rogers monthly bill. Took phone home, restored/synced from iTunes, swapped SIM from my existing 3G. Bingo – no wallies.

The store on St Cath near McGill? Excuse my ignorance, but does the Apple store just sell the device, or are they authorized to set up the Roger’s service as well?

yes, the one near McGill. they sell the device + activate it. you get the same price as you would with Rogers/Fido. also, you can use Fido’s “dollars” towards the purchase. so, basically, it’s the same thing. they don’t charge you anything… it all goes to your next month’s bill. you can also purchase w/o a contract while Fido stores, for instance, do not yet allow this.

Since Apple stores in Canada now sell the iPhone directly to consumers; maybe us Canadians can finally get AppleCare Protection Plans for our Iphones like the Americans. Hasn’t Apples excuse on why they don’t offer AppleCare Protection in Canada always been that they (Apple) don’t directly sell the iPhone to consumers?

at $299 for 32gig.
was told that because my bill was under $100 they couldn’t do it.
last year when signing up went for the full 6 gig deal which after tax usually works out to $95

Attempted the $299 upgrade and was successful I guess. Called Rogers CS and was told I was eligible for it, but that they only could get me the 16GB(32GB sold out) over the phone last monday the 22nd. Went to a Rogers Plus with really understanding employees(although the two that helped me had the 3GS themselves lol), could only get it at $549 through them; got it with them telling me to call Customer Service to adjust it. Did so and relayed my situation to the rep, and was told to go back to the Plus with them calling back to CS. To be sure it went okay she gave me the names of the reps/interaction #s where I was told I was eligible for the $299 upgrade, so now I just have to wait for my device’s bill(since they had to upgraded manually); and they’ll adjust it for me!

Rogers let others jump the queue? lied about “in stock” status? or something else…

I ordered my 32GB white iPhone 3GS through phone orders on June 22nd as well. I am in the same situation as you are. No phone, no ETA. I had a non-smart phone so now I am being charged the data plan and iPhone package without an iPhone. Lame customer relation was super defensive when I called and can only offer a credit on the plans once I get the phone.

how is being offered a credit = lame service? what were you expecting? a moral compensation for the time without your new shiny toy? get real. when ordering over the phone you should have known better. the only time you can get the phone “instantly” is if you buy it directly from any retail store that has the phone in stock. any orders done on-line, over the phone, by mail or via other means are all subject to availability. not available handsets = no luck.

customer relations offered you a good solution. take it and wait for your phone to arrive. OR, call them and cancel the phone/contract and say that you will buy one in store.

I am not affiliated with Rogers nor do I work for any CS. Arrogant attitude is to:

a) but in to someone else’s conversation without having anything constructive to write
b) calling customer relations “lame” when they offered a perfectly fine solution — credit for unused time

so, once again, if you have nothing to add to what the original poster said nor to my comment addressed to him, then don’t write anything at all.

Yes BOSS! Whatever you say BOSS! …Calvin is not permitted (by you) to post his experience and to call Rogers CS policy “lame” but YOU are allowed to call Calvin “lame”. I guess YOU feel that insulting another poster is “constructive”
What I have to add to Calvin’s post is that I too had the same problem that Rogers was going to start charging me for my data plan before I even recieved my iPhone…yes..now that is lame! Would you pay for gas for a car you don’t even have yet?

ML

Don’t put words in my mouth. If you reply to something, then have some constructive input rather than merely asking whether one’s reply was necessary and offering to get off one’s horse. Calvin described his experience but was also wrong in calling customer relations lame, considering that he was offered a perfectly workable solution.

Your example with car and gas is irrelevant. The proper analogy would be insurance and a car. Insurance = prerequisite to buying a car. If you purchased insurance but the dealership for some reason delayed the release of your car, well, c’est la vie. Rogers, however, offers a credit for the unused time while one is without a phone. What are you crying about? You don’t lose a cent, it’s just the way their system is set up and you get reimbursed in the end. If you are upset that you don’t have a phone, well, think twice next time before ordering over the phone.

Nono

The proper word would have been incorrect, not irrelevant! But it is you who are incorrect in this matter. Data plan = Gas for an iPhone. For, without which, what would be the purpose of any smartphone?

I don’t need to put any words in your mouth as your foot seems big enough! Do you really think your post was constructive? Have you seen the amount of people with this exact problem? Rogers charging for a service without a tool to operate! Most, who are having this problem understand that there is a backorder on the phone! It’s being charged for the data plan that is the problem!!!

Relevance is a term used to describe how applicable something is to a given matter. Your example was irrelevant. Car insurance, however, is a relevant analogy — you cannot buy a car without having insurance, just like you cannot buy your iPhone without getting a data plan. A year ago I was in a similar situation and was also “charged” while being without a phone. A credit to my account rectified the situation. What’s your point? You are NOT losing any money. You can argue as much as you want about the unreasonable system that Rogers and Fido have, however, it does not affect your wallet — you will be given a credit. If you are unhappy being without your iPhone, call them, cancel your order and then go into the store and purchase one. I had to drive 2 hours to another city to get mine when I returned 16GB and found out that everyone in my city was sold out of 32GB.

Do you think that charging for a service without the use of the tool correct? Yes or no? This is the point! NOT whether or not the phone is in stock.

ML
ML

Signing up for that service was required for you to get the phone. You were informed that it would become active right away and you KNEW that you were not going to get your phone for at least a couple of days while it is being delivered. At that time you thought the arrangement was fair, no? If you didn’t, then you would not have purchased the phone. However, when you learned that the phone would be delayed, you became upset and all of a sudden the arrangement is not fair. Just like Calvin and others, you should have been offered a credit. In this case, you are NOT paying a cent for “a service without the use of the tool”. Do you still want to discuss this further? Honestly, do you not see that Rogers acknowledged the problem by offering people credits? Do you want them to do more than that? Be litigious and sue them then, demand compensation for setting and not meeting expectations. Uh.

Ok. Time for the war to stop.
Both you of are missing a KEY factor in this debate. If the original post (calvin) did NOT get a data plan, he would NOT have received Promo pricing, and likely would not have went with the purchase. The data plan in this case was required to get the iPhone.
Due to delays in shipments, Rogers is offering credits and Calvin can and will be credited his data plan + taxes if he calls and asks. ML is right, a credit is all he will get.
End. Done.

ML

Exactly. I said and repeated it a number of times: data plan is a prerequisite to getting an iPhone. The fact that it was added to the system from day 1 must have been communicated to Calvin. This is how their system works. Since Calvin remains without a phone, Rogers offered to give him credit. It’s just like removing the data plan from his account for the time being; that is, it’s like never getting the plan. 3+2 or 2+3 all equal 5.

Rogers is NOT offering credits…you must complain to get it. Yes, you cannot have one without the other. I never argued that point! And no, credit is not all you can get…read Kevin’s post below…I also fought for something similar!

This is my first point. Rogers was taking orders and starting to charge for data plans knowing full and well that the phones were out of stock. Is this reasonable? My second point, less important to all, is that ML can stomp around in all his arrogance, infer that other peoples ideas are lame and get away with it. Because why? He frequents this site often?

Whatever! This will probably be edited…LOL

ML

1. Kevin’s response talks about getting credit for non-usage of the data plan. It’s a credit. 1 month, 2 months, whatever – it remains a credit for a service that he couldn’t use because he had no phone.
2. Rogers has no way of knowing whether you have the phone or not (I mean, they do but their system isn’t setup this way). You want to buy an iPhone? You have to sign up for data plan that comes into effect right away. Then they take your order for and iPhone and while you may not receive it for the next 2 months, their system thinks that you already own it. Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s not the point of this discussion. Their supply management system is obviously not setup to keep a separate stock for telephone orders and update quantities in real-time. Otherwise, they would not have taken your order.

The point is, they are crediting your account. They will credit it for as long as you don’t have the phone because getting the data plan was a prerequisite to buying the phone. Obviously, you may have to explain that to them but if you are using your arrogant attitude and expressing your obvious displeasure with not having the phone in your hands, it may provoke them to answer in kind.

3. Once again, stop putting words in my mouth. I never inferred that anyone’s ideas are “lame”. I said that it is lame to call someone lame, considering that someone made an offer — a credit. Nothing less, nothing more. There is no arrogance in my response, just plain facts.

I did, however, point out that you should have thought twice before placing your order over the phone; it’s not like you’re buying from the store where they know EXACTLY how many units they have left. Those who take orders at Rogers/Fido do not have such information.

It happened to me. I ordered first thing on Monday June 22 and was made to believe that not only was it in stock, but that it would be arriving in my hands in 3-5 business days. 5 days later and no iPhone, I called Rogers to inquire and they told me the phone was out of stock and my purchase was on back order, awaiting shipment. No ETA or sympathy either, and they’ve already begun charging me for new data plan.

I ordered a 3GS on Monday June 22nd. The Rep said they had all the models in stock. Surprising. Also wrong. I can’t go store-hunting, since I got a non-standard plan you can’t really walk into an apple or rogers store and get. So, now I hear the truth after calling back for a tracking number, and now I have to just sit and wait for.. 2 weeks? 3 weeks? More? Grr. Why I can’t just go find the phone, or order one from the US or whatever… that is REALLY annoying. Obviously there were some allocation mistakes between Canada and the US – the stores have all kinds of stock of the 3GS in the US.
Again… GRR.

USA is the birthplace of Apple, has a bigger customer base and will obviously get priority.

It doesn’t matter if you have a non-standard plan. You can still get the phone and the salesperson will contact Rogers to complete the transaction and work out the details. So, ordering by phone just makes no sense UNLESS you pre-order before the launch date. Only in that case you will most likely get your phone on time and sometimes before the herd of people who line up in the store.

call Rogers and cancel the phone/contract and say that you will buy one in store.

Not everyone can order/upgrade in stores. If you are on a corporate plan with corporate rates, Rogers will no longer let you upgrade in a store. It has to be done over the phone. It’s absurd.

I’m in the same boat, I ordered mine over the phone on the 20th was told that they were in stock and would ship within 3-5business days. I call today and they now tell me that my order is backlogged and they have yet to receive another shipment of phones. That my order could take 7-10business days (which I don’t believe). Considering it’s already been 6business days…I doubt I’ll get my phone before the middle of July. I sold my old iPhone thinking I could do without a phone for the next 3-5 days…My fault…I should’ve waited.

Ok. I ordered my phone on June 23rd from Rogers via phone in. Same boat as everyone else, no phone. I have called a number of times and keep getting the same run around (no date yet, not sure when, blah blah blah).

Now, they put the 6GB plan on my account and I expect it to show up on my next bill, and this really irritated me so I called in again.

What they offered me was a $30 credit and I get the phone when I get the phone, to which I replied that was unacceptable. I do not mind paying for the data plan when I can use it but if I can’t use it I’m not paying for it.

Anyhow instead of rambling this is where I ended up:

– iPhone ETA – whenever
– 1 month data plan free (comes out to $35 something)
– A note on my file that I will call in and get a pro-rated credit for any future data plan usage after the first “free” month until I get the phone (i.e. if it shows up in 2 months I call in and get another “free” month

What was surprising is it took 20 min to get this reasonable settlement.

Anyone out there who is iPhone less but data plan rich, I suggest you call them and have this compromise put on your account as well.

Seems there may be some confusion. Looks like there is 2 Kevins posting in here. I’ve set myself as Kevin – 2.

I wrote the post that I am replying to.

I put the recommendation out that people having a problem should call rogers, contact sales (because as a friend of mine who works are rogers stated “if you don’t have the product its still a sales issue”). Talk to them about how you don’t have your phone but are being billed for the data plan, and see what they do.

I personally got discombobulated (word of the day) with them and asked them to play back my initial call with the order. I had specifically stated in that call that I do not want to be billed for the data plan until I have the phone to which the CSR agreed (its true, its recorded, and I guess its a pain in the butt to dig up that information).

The CSR offered to remove the data plan, which would have canceled my order.. Did not want this.

The CSR offered me a 30 day credit one time only and no other recourse. This is what started my discombobulation. Simply because if it takes longer then 30 days I am not willing to pay for a service that I can not use. I told them I would pay for the data plan as soon as the phone arrives, and they told that she could put a note on my account that I will call in and “request” a credit at that time. I’m not personally interested in calling Rogers, I find it time consuming and I would rather just solve the problem in one call.

By this time the call was not going well, I wanted to simple cancel the order and go get a blackberry from Bell.

I then said “If you give me the $30 credit and note my account that if the phone takes longer than one month to arrive I will get a further prorated credit for the unusable time, then this call can end with my satisfaction” (sorry I used quotes but I think that is a slight paraphrase of what I said.

The CSR put me on hold to check with her supervisor to get authorization to do so. 3 min passed and then she was back and an agreement was made. The way she worded the incident number within their system indicated that I would get a credit for any unused data (this was clever on Rogers part, i.e. if I use my existing 3G phone to surf the net then I forfeit any further credits, I do not use my existing phone for data at all so I opted not to fight this one out).

She then asked if I was happy and I said that this was the very least Rogers could do, and that I consider it unacceptable to charge for a service that I can not use (the data plan is tied to the iPhone, and I do not want data on my existing phone). In my humble opinion I think it is good business but very poor customer support to infer that a favour is being done by not charging for services that you can’t use.

It is one thing to pay for an iPhone and the associated dataplan and not use it. It is quite another thing to pay for a data plan and iPhone and not have the phone to be able to take advantage of the data plan. This is the point I raised with Rogers.

To be perfectly frank about it all, if I could have got my iPhone by another mobile provider I would have. Rogers is taking steps in the right direction but it is very tiresome to have to do battle with CSRs when you call in for changes.

I used to have internet, HDTV PVR, 2 mobile phones etc etc with Rogers and was in the range of 250-300/month in fees. At this point I am down to just 1 phone with Rogers and I would have walked to go somewhere else if I could get an iPhone from someone else.

Rogers needs to manage expectations better, if you say something will take 5 days, it needs to take 5 days. If they told me up front it will take 20 days to get your phone, I may have delayed my order but at least I would know the ballpark. As of right now, I still have no idea when the phone will arrive but the billing side I have sorted out.

Kevin

P.S. ONE last thing. When you get agreement with Rogers on something that you wanted, ask the CSR for the incident number/ID and keep it for your records. You can save yourself time and effort by giving that to the next CSR so they know where to start from.

Ordered 3gs from Fido (over the phone) on June 19th. At the time, they said the latest I’d get it was July 7, but most likely would arrive within a week. At day 13 and counting… wonder if they prioritize all the actual new customers? I mean, I’m annoyed I haven’t got it yet, but I can still use my old phone. New customers would be phoneless for weeks, no? I’m betting it will be mid July before I see it 🙁

just got a call from FIDO CSR. although my order was accepted (over the phone) before 830am on June 19th, they are extending my delivery date to July 10th (at the latest). apparently no one who called in has received a phone yet which means that either they lied to many of us (because they never had physical stock to send out) or their operations/shipping department couldn’t send out product within three weeks, which is unlikely. Either way, I am not pleased. had i known they would give all of their stock to the retail locations I would have waited in line.

I ordered my iPhone 3G S upgrade through the Rogers.com web site. The next day when I phoned in to check on the status, the guy said he couldn’t find my order in the system and it was probably just sitting in someone’s inbox! No problem though, as he could order one right away for me. *click* *click* – Ooh, sorry we’re totally out of stock! If I were you I’d just wait for your on-line order to process. Alternately you could go to a local retailer and they will be able to get you a phone right away. So I call a few local retailers and get “Sorry, we can’t upgrade existing Customers in Store. You have to call Rogers directly!” Okay, no problem. I call Rogers and give them my online order number from my initial attempt. She replies back “Oh, sorry that order was cancelled! I will order your upgrade right away though. What colour/size phone would you like?” I told her white, 16 GB. She said no problem, just so you know your contract will be extended by 1 year and there’s a $199.00 upgrade fee. This is just what I had expected so all is good. I wonder who cancelled my on-line order though? And I wonder why the local retailers can’t sell me the upgrade? I’m still waiting for my new phone to arrive. Rogers don’t send any form of confirmation email or update on my rogers account to indicate when the new phone has shipped! Any other people had experience with Rogers on the upgrade?

There is no reason why you cannot upgrade in store.
The person you spoke to you about that is simply incompetent.

Ordered mine over the phone w/ Rogers on the June 22nd and was told I would get it before end of the week. Coming to the end of the 2nd week and still no phone. Called Rogers last night about the status of my order and when the next shipment of phones would be. The answer I got was “we have no info. and no ETA”. I told the Rep. that I had added the data plan when I ordered the iphone and since I don’t have the iphone i can’t use the data so I wanted to be credited. After some more talking, the rep said he would remove the data plan and that i could call in later when i receive my iphone to reactivate it.

Hmm. I would check for 2 things:

1.) Will you pay a cancellation fee?

2.) Will you still pay the same price that you paid for the device when you added the data plan?

Yup, I asked about that when the Rep removed the data plan. He said he waived the data cancellation fee and that nothing else changes.

I am in the same boat. Ordered over the phone on June 21st and still no phone, no ETA. Was told to call back when I finally got the phone to get credit for the data plan I can’t use on my current phone (a non-smart phone). I know it’s not Roger’s fault for the shortage in stock. What makes me upset is that I found out about the back-order news on this blog after waiting over a wekk and not from a notification from Rogers. Customer relation told me there is no way they can notify the “thousands” of canaidan still waiting for their iPhone order to be filled. Why not? Amazon generates an automatic e-mail when your order can’t be filled to due shortage in stock. *sigh*

Amazon = on-line store. how many people gave Rogers their e-mails to put on file? I would dare to say only a small percentage.

I gave them my e-mail adress for the reason that they can send my a tracking number when the phone has shipped. So I naively expected that I would get an “out of stock” e-mail.

On-line store argument doesn’t hold weight cause Rogers also offer odering the iPhone 3GS online.

Maybe this will help some people. At the Eaton’s Centre Apple Store, and the Rogers Plus on the lowest level they got more in yesterday. Saw people at the Apple Store using the $500 off upgrade to get their 3GS(Their workers were trying to make sure eveyone looking at the display 3GSs knew they could do the upgrade…)

No more waiting! I asked Rogers to cancel my hardware upgrade order placed over the phone but to keep all the plans in place. Went to the Apple Store in Eaton Centre, got my phone at the HUP pricing ($274) and was out the store in 15 mins. I would encourage all of you who are still waiting for your phone to ship to do the same!

D’uh! I’ve been saying this from the very beginning and am glad that you did so. Enjoy your 3GS! 🙂

My friend called Rogers yesterday, it was quite comical. Here’s how it went down:

Friend: “Put me through to your escalations department”
CSR: *in a bitchy tone* “Ummm…why?”
Friend: “Because you JUST gave me attitude” *LOL!*

The escalations team said, and I quote: “…a shipment has been received today and all orders are being fulfilled. No Rogers/Fido stores will get more stock until ALL backorders are completed. Any one who ordered before the 21st of the month will get their phone(s) before the end of next week, July 10th. Any one who ordered after that should expect their order the following week…”

See now why couldn’t they post that on their website? Or educate their CSRs a bit more…Jeez.

I ordered online from Rogers on the launch day and, like many people, I’m still waiting. I received one email that told me to call the online order store and they simply said we’re sold out. They did say to call again in 5 days if I don’t receive an email about it being shipped. In this day and age how can they not anticipate demand? I hope the phone number I picked will actually be mine as I’ve been giving it out to everyone. As a new Rogers customer storm clouds are brewing in this relationship already. I didn’t realize the disgruntled rogers customer thing started immediately! What did I get myself into? Shite!

Went to the Apple store at West Edmonton Mall today and picked up a 16gig Black 3GS, i got tired of waiting for fido to get stock in…

For all of you waiting, you can do everything at an apple store that you can through fido and rogers. I am a current fido customer, in my renewal window. I was eligible to get my phone for the $199 and i submitted my fido dollars ($154 of them!) right there at the apple store. So my waiting a week for fido stores to get stock was a waste, could have gone straight to the apple store.
Only problem i ran into there, was the fido site asked for a 4 number pin, i had never had a pin on my account before, only a password with letters) after three phone calls from my Apple guy Michael to fido (who got hung up on twice.. which was not warranted at ALL) and another phone call by me to get the pin thing sorted out.. i walked out with my phone!

My only suggestion is.. book a shopping appointment on the site.. or you’ll spend a lot of time waiting. also.. make sure you know your pin. ha

Rogers is apparently working on Orders placed on the 22nd. Some have been receiving theirs today.

Fido and Rogers retail stores were both out of stock of the iphone 3gs in Montreal, so I picked one up from the apple store. I did a transfer from Fido to Rogers to avoid the early cancellation fee and get the subsidy. Apple employees have no problems porting numbers and migrating accounts.

Lovely Apple! Nice of you to totally stock your own stores while Fido and Rogers have a huge backlog of orders for your product. Especially in light of the fact your blasted Apple stores still aren’t nationwide so, running out to an Apple Store to pick one up is pretty much out of the question for many Canadians!

I ordered a Black 16g 3GS on June 24 from Rogers. Received it yesterday without getting an email telling me it had been shipped. It was a HUP so I think it got some sort of priority.

My problem is, I had ordered the IPHONE 3GS on June 22 with Rogers and till now, I didn’t receive the phone yet. Trying to call Rogers, every day is the same answer, (out of stock). What a poor customer service, if they know they don’t have stock, why the hell they still accept orders from customers to upgrade or order a new IPHONE, totally unacceptable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah same thing here. Exact same.. my bill is usally 104 but before taxes and everything its 95$. I called and spoke to sales and they said they couldn't do anything and said can i talk to customer service and after talking to him for 10 minutes.. he said he really couldn't do anything about the price of the phone.

But that he would take $35 dollars for 4 months off my account which would work out to a little over what i wanted to get the phone for but… hey why not?

but he said regardless of whether i get the phone or not the $35 dollars will be taken off my bill for customer service.
