Apple’s has just extended its AppleCare+ accidental damage coverage program to the Mac, allowing you to insure your expensive desktops and laptops against trips, spills and falls (via MacRumors).
While AppleCare, the extended warranty program by Apple, is available for almost all of its products, the AppleCare+ only covered iOS devices. But now, AppleCare+ includes the Macs as well, with each incident of accidental damage carrying its own price tag.
Below is Apple’s description of AppleCare+ for Mac:
“Every Mac comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for Mac extends your coverage to three years from the original purchase date of your Mac and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax.1 In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts by chat or phone”.
AppleCare+ pricing for each Mac is different, with the desktops being the cheapest to insure. In order to qualify, the Mac must have been purchased within the last 60 days. Also, the machine must go through a diagnostic test before AppleCare+ can be applied.

Unfortunately, AppleCare+ for Mac is not available in Canada yet, according to an Apple retail store we called. The Canadian website for AppleCare+ for Mac does not list any mention of “accidental damage”. So in the meantime, Canadians will have to wait for this coverage to arrive in the future (better place your coffee far away from your MacBook Pro).
