Both regular AirPods and AirPods Pro will soon get a new automatic switching feature, which will allow the AirPods to automatically switch audio inputs based on which Apple device you’re using.

So if you’re listening to music on your iPhone with your AirPods and then start playing a video on your Mac, the audio feed will automatically switch over to your Mac.

Additionally, the AirPods Pro will be getting a new 3D “Spatial Audio” surround feature. The new feature will bring surround sound-style audio to your AirPods Pro to offer a movie theatre experience and will constantly recalibrate based on the position of your head.

Other new features:

  • Battery notifications when your AirPods are on low charge
  • Headphone Accommodations: Adjust AirPods audio to account for hearing differences
  • Audio Sharing for Apple TV 4K: share audio with two sets of AirPods

Apple says automatic device switching will be supported on AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation), Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro. iCloud account is required for this feature to work.

These new features will roll out with iOS 14 when the latter is released this fall.
