Apple announced a new Mac Mini at the Apple event on Tuesday, the biggest update the mini desktop has ever received.
At Apple’s event in New York City, the company took the wraps off a revamped Mac Mini, replacing its underpowered parts with new, 8th generation Intel quad- and 6-core processors options, up to 64GB of memory, up to a 2TB SSD, a T2 security chip, 10GB ethernet, and four Thunderbolt 3 ports.
The new Mac Mini also features a familiar rectangular design (with the same size enclosure, even), but in a sleek new space grey finish.
The Mac Mini has Intel’s 8th generation processors — in four- and six-core i7, i5, and i3 flavors — and 60 percent faster graphics. The processor’s paired with up to 64GB of RAM (32GB comes standard) at 2666MHz and up to 2TB of SSD storage — double the capacity of previous Mac Minis. Overall, it’s up to 5 times faster than the previous-gen models, Apple claims, and can drive 4K and 5K Thunderbolt displays and output in three formats.
The Mac Mini enters the modern era of Apple computers with its vast port offering that includes four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI and Ethernet along with powerful internals that make it a super appealing desktop for Apple users.
With all of this power and versatility, the Mac mini is the only desktop many Mac users will need. It’s plenty fast enough for things like image and video editing, music creation, and software development.
Apple has managed to pack all of these improvements into a shell that’s exactly the same size as the previous Mac mini’s. And this time, as Apple so proudly proclaimed, it’s made out of 100 percent recycled aluminum — just like the brand new MacBook Air.
You can order the new Mac mini today ahead of its official debut on November 7. It starts at $999 CAD, and for that you get a quad-core Intel Core i3 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.
