Child Swallows AirPod and was Rushed to ER

A young, seven-year-old boy swallowed an AirPod on New Year’s Eve and his mother now warns other parents of the potential dangers the small, wireless headphone can possess.

According to WSB-TV, this incident occurred as a family was getting ready to ring in the new year. DeKalb County resident Kiara Stroud said that her seven-year-old son was playing with his new Christmas present, a set of Apple AirPods, and had one of them in his mouth. Not long after, she discovered that her son had accidentally swallowed it.

Once rushed to the local children’s hospital, Stroud and her son were looked after in the ER. Doctors were able to quickly identify the AirPod in the child via X-rays and found the AirPod just below his ribcage. Stroud told reporters: “We actually saw it because it has metal in it, so we could see it in the X-ray and I’m like, ‘This boy really swallowed his AirPod!”

Luckily, the doctors told Stroud that the AirPod would pass naturally and the child would be okay.

Additionally, Stroud told WSB-TV that the doctors were a bit unsure of what an AirPod was, to begin with. Stroud said: “She was like, ‘An AirPod? You know, it’s really unique. I never really heard of this,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s a wireless headset,’ and she was just amazed. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

As far as the child, he might be staying away from his phone and wireless headphones for a little bit. “He was like, ‘Mom. I don’t want my phone,’ because he got a phone for Christmas as well, and he’s like, ‘I don’t want to be near my phone. I don’t want it to connect to my phone and start playing music.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ He’s a crazy kid,” Stroud told WSB-TV.
