Govee Glide Wall Light Review

Upgrading your entertainment space or office to include RBG lighting has become increasingly more accessible. However, many options currently available can easily become a costly investment. While the option to save a penny or two does exist, it typically comes at a cost of quality. The new Govee Glide Wall Light is an affordable choice and provides a ton of customizable options for its users without forgoing any of the quality you’d expect.

Now, full transparency, I was not overly familiar with Govee prior to testing the latest Govee Glide. Although I had heard of the name, there are so many different brands catering to gamers and smart home LED enthusiasts, it’s hard to keep up. For good reason too, LEDs can offer a more immersive experience when playing games or watching movies. They can also be used to set a specific ambiance in a room whether you’re reading or winding down for the day. Smart home LEDs are very popular and Govee is securing its place as a standout amongst the competition.

Out of the Box

The Govee Glide wall light comes in a complete set of six individual and interchangeable LED light segments simply connected by snapping each one into place. The Govee Glide is categorized as a wall light. Therefore, the lights are designed to be fixed on your wall as you see fit. Whether it’s a simple addition on your wall to bring in an assortment of customized lights, the option is there. They can be mounted along your baseboard or underneath a shelf if you see fit.

Included in the set is a single L-shaped segment that can be used to create a different alignment aside from a straight line. Using the L-Shape piece, you can imagine creating a 90-degree pattern to frame a portion of your TV or monitor. While the kit does come with all seven pieces, you can use as many as you’d like. It’s all a part of Govee’s commitment to providing a customized, user-friendly experience.

In my case, I opted to fix four lights along the backside of my office desk. Although the Govee Glide is designed to be fixed on a wall, the light’s included command strips enable the fixtures to be mounted on a variety of surfaces. Thankfully, the pre-applied strips also ensure that the user doesn’t have to drill any holes or make cosmetic changes to the area of which the lights are being placed. Included in the kit is the power source adapter, which features a 1.8m cord length, giving you plenty of wiggle room to place your lights from a power source. The power adapter also has two adhesive strips so it can be hidden and not be an eyesore in your room.

From a build quality perspective, the individual lights are fairly well built. When snapping each piece together, there is a bit of give to them, which could be seen as a concern at first glance. That said, once I fixed them to my desk, there was absolutely no issue and they’ve remained in place ever since. My only wish was there were one or two additional L-shaped pieces available in the kit. Having only the single unit constricted the number of configurations I could possibly come up with had I opted to place them elsewhere.

Customization Options

The Govee Glide is fully controlled by way of the Govee Home app on iOS and Android. The app features a surprisingly expansive hub where you can control Govee’s patented RGBIC lighting tech to display up to 57 colours at one time and a total of 16 million colours. With a wide array of colour options, I found myself playing around with a number of colour combinations. Thankfully, the app is very user-friendly and offers a staggering amount of dynamic scenes and modes to choose from. The modes themselves range from ‘Leisure’ which gives off a warm, orange hue to ‘Birthday’ which pulses between red, blue, green, pink, and more.

You can also choose from a selection of static colours if you’re looking for a colour to suit the vibe of your room. You can also control each individual segment of the Glide and set them accordingly. The Glide will then seamlessly transition between colours throughout each section. You can also set it to exude a warmer or colder tone. Diving further into the custom modes, you can set a DIY mode and experiment with the many options. If there’s a particular speed or gradient you’re looking to create, chances are you’ll find an option for it within the app. These custom creations can also be uploaded and used by the Govee community. Likewise, you can access downloadable community presets to use as well.

Finally, the Govee Home app also provides a method for you to pair your Glide lights to music. There are six premade modes that are serviceable to pair with the tracks you happen to be listening to. You can also sync the app to the music playing from your device. Selecting this option will enable the app to use your smartphone’s microphone and react to music and sounds. Funny enough, in one instance I had this option going and had to take a phone call. With my music turned off, the lights then began reacting and bouncing between colours as I spoke.

If you’re one to obsess over various customization options, you’ll find a lot to get excited over with the Govee Glide and Home app. You can really dive into a surprising amount of options and tailor your lighting experience to your preference.

Smart Home Integration

The Govee Glide is also compatible and can be integrated into your smart home. You can pair your lights to work with Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. Being connected to the internet via WiFi, the Govee Glide lights can be controlled by voice commands. You can toggle the lights on and off and also ask the smart home assistant to swap to a preset option.

Final Thoughts

The Govee Glide wall light is proof that you can begin building or expanding your RGB smart home lighting system without emptying your wallet. Priced at $89.99 USD, the Glide lighting is a compelling kit when placed against competitors. The kit Govee provides packs a ton of value between the bright and powerful lighting system and its accompanying Govee Home app. Without forgoing quality, the Govee Glide has an impressive design. The seams between each individual piece are near non-existent.

After using the Govee Glide for over a week, my main point of criticism is that I wish the company offered accessories and additional power supplies. I wish I could purchase a single L-shaped piece and an additional power source for the remaining segments of the kit. Unless you can utilize all six light segments, there isn’t a way to repurpose those elsewhere. Besides that, Govee is a user-friendly option and should be on your radar the next time you consider a new RBG light system for your living room, office, or anywhere in your home.
