According to a report by Economic Daily News (via MacRumors), Apple will introduce a triple-lens 12-megapixel camera iPhone in 2019.
The Taiwanese publication also notes that the camera will feature a 6P lens design with 5x zoom, though it is not known whether it will be optical, digital, or hybrid zoom. Currently, Huawei’s P20 Pro smartphone sports a three-lens rear camera system with 3x optical zoom, which according to The Verge, is “superior to those on the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X”.
The extra lens would certainly offer a lot of advantages, including much improved low-light performance. It could also act as some kind of rangefinder to enhance the camera, possibly with a depth-mapper like used in Face ID to help with ARKit applications.
It must however be noted that the Taiwanese source has a poor track record on predicting Apple’s future plans. Also, the device isn’t expected to be announced until Fall 2019, so the rumors are quite likely to change till then.
