The TTC has announced you can now see real-time bus passenger counts starting today, within the Rocketman and Transit apps.

The TTC says secure data streams from NextBus are being provided to the developers of both apps, to let riders see how busy buses are, for better trip planning.

There are three statuses available:

  • Not busy (1 icon): 0-30% capacity
  • Busy (2 icons): 30-80% capacity
  • Very busy (3 icons): over 80% capacity

Standard buses can hold roughly 51 passengers, while articulated buses hold 77.

“This new feature will go a long way to helping customers feel safe on our bus network and helping riders feel comfortable when riding the TTC,” said TTC Chair Jaye Robinson, in a statement. “By providing volume data, the TTC is giving our riders an extremely useful tool to use when planning their trips on our bus system.”

For now, only TTC buses have the technology for real-time passenger counts.

“We know our bus network is unique in the challenges it faces at this time,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary, in a statement. “The vehicles are smaller than our other modes and serve high density parts of the City where many people are working in essential front-line jobs. These apps will give customers valuable information to assess their own comfort while planning and taking trips.”

The TTC says the feature will show for the next two or three buses heading towards a stop, “depending on scheduled headways between vehicles.” The data is meant as a guideline and the TTC says counts can change quickly, so riders are to use their own discretion.
