WhatsApp Handles Record 64 Billion Messages in 24 Hours, Goes Down Later

WhatsApp yesterday evening announced a new record for daily messages handled in 24 hours of 64 billion: 20 billion sent and 44 billion received. That’s a growth of 10 billion messages since January.

Oddly enough, early this morning the messaging service experienced its second widespread outage since being acquired by Facebook for $16 billion in February, according to reports on Twitter and CanadianOutages.com:

The downtime was relatively short and service looks to be back up and running for its over 450 million monthly active users. Did you experience downtime with WhatsApp this morning?
