Update: iPhoneNow.ca is in the news: http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=cf51ae03-de31-46fb-a632-725dc8809508&k=53201

For those on the Westcoast of BC, particularly those in the Lower Mainland, you might have seen the television ads running on the TV listings channel. What kind of ads am I talking about? iPhones of course! There’s this company called iPhoneNow.ca that is advertising “unlocked iPhones” in Canada, and for Canadians to place their orders ASAP because quantities are limited. But wait, it doesn’t stop there–you can qualify for “EasyPay” payments of $69/month! If you order with Interact Online, you’ll save 2% on your purchase, but you’ll lack the “charge back” security provided by credit cards.

Okay, so what’s the deal with iPhoneNow.ca? The new iPhones with version 1.1.2 firmware cannot be unlocked at the moment. So how is iPhoneNow.ca unlocking their phones? Well, after a small investigation, it was confirmed that they are indeed using a TurboSIM-like solution.

iPhoneNow.ca has priced their phones at $699CDN…after checking their website, prices are now at $649CDN. I had a couple readers ask me about purchasing from them. That seems pretty pricey to me, especially ordering online from a start up company that hasn’t been around for a long time. You could just buy an iPhone from the US for $399, then spend $125-150CDN for a TurboSIM chip (eBay), and you will still “save” $100CDN or so.

Are they legit? Should you buy from iPhoneNow.ca? A look at their “About Us” page reveals the site is run by a company that has business interests in both the USA and Canada. They list two dealers as service centers. The one in the United States, lists:

CIPC Worldwide Holdings Corporation
108 West 13th Street, Suite 200
Wilmington DE 19801

In Canada, they offer service through:

Jiffy Wireless
555 West Hastings Street
Vancouver, British Columbia
Canada V6B 1M1

Thanks to one our readers at iPhone in Canada, we were able to get a transcript of a “live chat”…here are parts 1 and 2:

iphonenowchat.PNGiphonenowchat2.PNG

If you were too lazy to read the chat, it explains that the phones are indeed unlocked using a TurboSIM method, and they ship via FedEx or Purolator. Also, the chip solution is “so easy” the CSR’s 8 year old was able to perform it! Wow, I’m sold! ;)

iPhoneNow.ca looks really pretty on their website–they’ve spent a lot of time ripping Apple’s images to place on their site. If there are happy iPhoneNow.ca customers out there, please let us know, as we’d love to hear from you about their service! In the meantime, if you really really really really NEED an iPhone, I would suggest following my list of Top 5 Ways to Buy an iPhone in Canada first before approaching iPhoneNow.ca — you might save some money!

    Fraud UnlockPhone Online sell.

www.iphoneunlocking.com is a totally cheating and fraud company.

I buy online unlock 3g Iphone software. It does not work at all. I email to them 6 times and no response at all.

I required Paypal to charge back but Paypal can not protect me. The paypal guarantee does not cover the digital products.

I asked my Visa company and they told me no way to get the money back.

Never trust online small company other you will lose money.

    Sincerely

  • For anyone wishing to recover their damages if they have been defrauded by iPhonenow.ca, Scott Byers now resides at 33529 11Ave, Mission BC. This was the latest verifiable address as of November 18, 2008.
  • LOL!

They are on Hastings. I cannot explain to you how rubby-dub that part of Vancouver is. It is littered with drug users. It is the absolute... shit how do I explain this. It's like a crack house that extends for an entire block. Nobody dares walk it at night. Cops are constantly driving up and down it because it is the number one criminal hang out.

My god, stay the hell away from this company. Talk about shady with a capital S!

Serio, my advice, stay away! I know Vancouver (because I have lived in Vancouver all my life) and I've learned that this city is crawling with people who set up shop, take your money, and are gone before you know it, setting up somewhere else under another buisness name.

The letter sent today was for damage control, now you have signed for it through Purolator he has proof that he sent you something. Even if it is just a piece of paper.
  • Rippedoff
Has anyone else received a letter from "cipc world holings", shipped via purolator? Can someone please explain to me why and how they have been able to open ANOTHER SITE?? I think they are just trying to do some damage control?
  • Dean
I'm one of the lucky ones maybe?

No, I didn't receive my iphone as was promised to me.

My card was charged on December 4. By January 4, I still hadn't received my phone, and the tracking number given to me was still invalid.

I wrote them a long email explaining why I believe this operation is scam. I forwarded the email to my lawyer, the RCMP, the Better Business Bureau, and my credit card company.

A few days later I received an email saying that I would be refunded in full, without being charged a re-stocking fee. A few days after my credit card was refunded fully. I'm getting a new credit card, since this this one has been compromised.

I wish luck to everyone else trying to get their money back.

  • white rhino
    SHOCKED!!!
Well, get this. As mentioned on a previous I asked my credit card company to do a charge back on my account for the cost of the phone, which they did. I noticed on my account today that CIPC had credited my account for the same amount. I was shocked because I did not ask for a credit from CIPC, I wanted to have no further contact with them. I instructed my credit card provider to return the funds that were done as a charge back. after all I don't want any monies that aren't mine. That would be fraudulent on my part. This opens up a new train of thought. Why would they refund money to me?
    Any thoughts?
  • scamwatcher
Keep the ones complaining happy, then hopefully everything will go away.
  • Wim
I'd bet the detectives must be singing to the tune I'm picking up good vibrations right now. I'm sure they'll be throwing a big party once they've got Josh Trousdale locked up in the North Fraser pre-trial detention center awaiting trial.

Wow!! This is more like it. Now the RCMP will get on the move. The more bad exposure they get the faster the hammer will fall. Great job to all you citizens who fought hard to bring info to the media both in Canada and Australia. Throw another shrimp on the barbie, cook these suckers!

  • Rippedoff
    Hi Everyone,

I placed an order for an Iphone from "iphonenow.ca" on Dec 6th, 2007. I was told that my order shipped on Dec 17th. When it didn't arrive a few weeks later, I kept calling in, getting no real answers. I spoke to someone on "live help" on their website. This "woman" that I was speaking to was rude and defensive, talking back to me and saying that my order had shipped and that they had sent me a tracking number.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE! Purolator had never heard of the tracking number I was issued. I wrote iphonenow about this and I got an email back saying that they had cancelled my order and that I should expect a refund.

The whole thing is obviously a scam, WHY IS THEIR SITE STILL UP?!?!
  • scamwatcher
    Dear Rippedoff,

I wouldn't be counting on the refund.

If you paid by Credit Card you should dispute the charge, as their terms and condition when you placed the order did not have the $500.00 penalty, please check out http://iphonenow.scamnet.org we have posted the pre and current terms.

I would highly recommend you lodge a complaint with repcol.ca and bbb.

    Regards,
    Steven

A WARNING TO ALL IPHONENOW.CA Customers

If you have placed an order with Iphonenow.ca, you are a now a victim of Fraud. If you do not believe it, read the post below about Iphone's owner in the media, and read the press releases. You must act promptly, and do the following:

    1. Notify your credit card company of fraud, your credit card number has been compromised.
    2. Contact the Better Business Bureau, and file a report with ripoffreport.com under iphonenow.ca.
    3. Contact the RCMP, local police department, or if you live in the United States, the FBI's internet fraud complaint center.
    4. Check with Equifax.ca, Experian.ca, transunion.ca, or Dun & Bradstreet Canada if you are a business.
    5. If you are called and intimidated by Iphonenow.ca about a credit card chargeback, hang up and press *57 on your phone, and report the call to police. At the very least, this may amount to charges of criminal harassment, and possibly even uttering threats.
    6. Check your computer for spyware.

There is also another warning about the scam. They claim to be shipping a SIM adapter this week. Refuse these shipments, as it will mess up your ability to get your credit card chargeback. Also, they state that a refusal means a 20% fee plus a 15% restock fee (35%). Look at the posts down below on Iphone.ca's owner in the news, and his criminal history.
    perraj@yahoo.com

Would persons/clients of this company who have posted here before please post back to give us any updates to your order status or actions you have since taken.

    iphone now COD
    they are now advertising cod,

"We are incredibly excited to announce the addition of our new UPS C.O.D. Service! Collect on Delivery lets people who are in areas where no local resellers are available for pickup, receive their phone without paying up front. UPS C.O.D. orders require only that you visit your local bank or post office and obtain a Canadian dollar money order for the full amount of your order. You phone us with the draft number so we can verify with the bank and we'll ship your order right away thereafter."

if you give them the #'s from a bank draft, cant they just use that info to deposit the money?

as a reader from the US, im amazed at the claim of 12,000 iphones sold from this company.. here in the states "apple/att" has policy in place so you can't buy more than 2 iphones per person, and will not take cash as a form of payment.. only credit card payments for tracking purposes.. apple inc does not sell the iphone to any other company/reseller besides the appropriate iphone service provider in certain restricted markets.. in fact, iphonenow.ca is violating several laws for even selling the iphone, at the very minor offense, being a 3rd party dealer who supplying an "original, unopened iphone" for monetary gain "profit", plenty of international importing violations, and hopefully will face apple's impressive legal team at some point.. I really do feel terrible for all of my neighbors up north who trusted and have now found themselves in such an awful situation.. all this waiting, frustration and time really ends up costing you financially at the end of the day.. I wish apple would bring the iphone to canada legally.. in fact, I encourage you to email sjobs@apple.com and let steve know directly how bad Canadians want the iphone.. but in the meantime, ebay seems to be the best place to snag and iphone and hopefully will have paypal protection..

There is even an Australian who has been ripped off who has set up a site exposing some of Trousdale's Lies, Cons, and Deceits.

    http://www.scamnet.org

And for those people who have been ripped off, file a report with http://www.ripoffreport.com, using the name iphone.ca under which to file the complaint. Notify the Lower Mainland Better Business Bureau as well.
  • white rhino
Wim: I noticed in a post you made on another site ( sorry if not you ) that you were speaking to a rep named Kelsey when trying to gain info about your purchase.
That is the name of the same rep who emailed me to inform me that this company was a scam.
This same rep has been giving info to the police and has claimed that he wasn't aware at first that things weren't legit. He now feels bad about ever being apart of this and is trying to make things right. check out any post made by femur. ehmac had a bunch but a lot of it got edited.
Due to more threats I would think.
  • I would like this post removed please. It contains reference to me. And anything in reference to me and my experience with it should be removed promptly. So if you could take out "Ex Employee" and "blah blah" posts, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am very annoyed with iphonenow.ca because they claimed I was a fraud, and threatened me for standing up for my rights as a consumer.

We are a bit more fortunate in Australia, that we have legal rights and especially when it comes to credit card transactions, if we dispute a transaction it is on the onus of the retailer to provide the necessary proof that the goods and/or services where received.

I have never had a bad experience trading on the internet, other then the few eBay auctions that have never arrived, but I guess thats what happens when you buy off eBay:) However, in the majority all my international orders have arrived and I have never been called a fraud, that really insulted my integrity.
  • Feeling Scammed
I don't think people are going overboard - this seems to be a lot like Trousdales last scam, and if it is him he should be brought down - he is a predator
Watch for the $500 chargeback fee and threats to your credit rating and the 35% restock if you do a chargeback.
VISA is also investigating this company because their terms and conditions are a violation of their merchant agreement.
  • scamwatcher
The latest letter published on iphonenow.ca is signed by Josh Trousdale, and gives contact details for RCMP however, the contact details are not correct. I tried calling the guy quoted this morning to no avail.
  • did i get ripped off?
I called visa and they are disputing the charge, I also emailed jen. She said i didnt get a refund because the order said canceled and should have said returned or some bullsh*t, so i emailed her back and asked how i could return something i never received. anyway ive had enough dealing with iphonenow. iphonenow is the worst company i have ever dealt with. I highly recommend not buying from them. If you are thinking of buying from iphonenow just go find a brick wall and slam your face into it, you'll get more satisfaction. so you guys dont think you are maybe going a little overboard with all this sh*t about trousdale or whatever? just get your money back and be done with it. it would be nice for someone to get rid of those stupid commercials on the tv guide channel about iphonenow though, i hope no one else gets ripped off. it hasnt been a real big deal for me but it just pisses me off to know someone has my f**kin money which i worked hard for and i didnt even get anything in return. I've had to make a sh*tload of phone calls and i hate looking at the phone let alone talking on the son of a bi**h. well i guess what i really want to say is that id like to send out a big F**K YOU to iphonenow, thanks for nothing!
  • Wim

    iPhoneNow Website Updates

    1. iPhoneNow has now stopped all pick up from their pickup points. The reason given that the service was too expensive to maintain and that it was used very seldomn.

    2. They are now indicating in their new news area that they will now begin to ship out all pending orders that have not been given to the courier, however they will be sending out a package that conains the activation kit, instructions and adapter in advance of the iphone.

You are now chatting with 'Jim'

    Mike Barlow: Hello Jim
Jim: Welcome to our live chat service.
Jim: Hello. How may I assist you?
Mike Barlow: I was thinking or odering from you, however reading the latest news page it seems that you will be sending the order in two parts is this correct?
Jim: That's only for current pending orders
Jim: we had an issue with our warehouse previously
Jim: where they couldn't process our order volume
Jim: so we're working with a new one now
Jim: and are just clearing up our 5800 phone backlog
Jim: and then switching to 1 warehouse
Mike Barlow: oh ok, so what timeframe would I be expecting to receive my iphone in for a new order?
    Jim: To Canada or Austrailia?
    Mike Barlow: Australia
Jim: that would take at least 15 days
Mike Barlow: ok! thanks for your help
    Jim: business days
    Jim: you're welcome
    Mike Barlow: cya

It would appear they have 5,800 unhappy customers still waiting on delivery. The wording on their news page is a bit hard to understand they are saying all new orders will receive it in 1 package.

Interesting, I didn't actually tell him what country I was in however, he must have known by my IP that I was in Australia.
  • Feeling Scammed
iphonenow now says on their site that they will be shipping the SIM adapter and instructions first by Purolator and then the iphone in a later shipment.
This means that they can challenge your credit card chargeback by stating you have received the shipment.
I would not sign for anything.
Their customer service rep I talked to insured that hey SIM card and adapter and iphone are shipped in the same box in the same shipment to the end customer - not two different shipments- again showing their deception, however I have a copy of the chat, so they can deny it.
They even changed their terms and conditions to say they will charge a $500 fee if you do a chargeback with your credit card, this was never part of their terms in early December, it actually changed in Jan.
It is also in direct contradiction to the merchant agreements for credit card usage - VISA is beginning an investigation into this company.
They also border on extortion by threatening to take customers to the credit bureau if they do not pay the $500 or fax a signed retraction of their chargeback.
It would be foolish to give them your signature as well as them having your credit card info.
I am taking full action in every way against this merchant, and I would advise everyone to do the same.
  • scamwatcher
Yes, I highlighted to Visa that they where advertising the verified by visa logo, however their ordering system is non compliant.

IPhone Fan: Thanks man, it worked great, no problems. cheers!

Can't believe I wasted all that time waiting.

At least if you buy an iphone from a seller on Ebay, you've got buyer protection. When you buy from an unknown website, you're hooped man, it's between you and your credit card company if you're lucky.

Yesterday I thought I would call the iphonenow 1-866 number, and to my suprise I spoke to a Customer Service Rep by the name Monica.

When she introduced herself she said "Welcome to CIPC Worldwide Holdings", I was a bit taken back, I asked her was this iphonenow.ca and she informed me that CIPC Worldwide Holdings owned iphonenow.ca I continued to question her and she was adamant that this was the case.

I also discovered that she was in the US and not Canada. I was hoping Jennifer Wilson could advise does CIPC Worldwide Holdings own iphonenow.ca if so why has she made previous comments that this is not the case?

Doing a corporate search online through BC ONLINE, it revealed that the sole shareholder of CIPC Worldwide Holdings Ltd. is Josh Tristan Trousdale, formerly known as Scott Frederick Byers.
