Go To The USA To Fill Up Gas? Use Gas Runner For iPhone

Do you fill your gas tank in the USA, finding that it can be cheaper to fill up down south than in Canada? If so, Gas Runner for iPhone can be a great resource!

In the never ending battle of rising gas prices, some savvy Canadians have jumped the border to fill up their tanks. But before deciding to drive south, it’s good to know how much you’ll actually be saving.

Gas Runner, developed by a local Vancouverite, is a great resource app for those who buy gas south of the border. The app enables users to input the American pump price in dollars/gallon and Gas Runner calculates the equivalent Canadian cents/litre.

Since Gas Runner deals with multiple currencies, the current exchange rate is updated via the web. However if you have no Internet connection, you may manually input the exchange rate.

If you frequently head south for gas, Gas Runner could be helpful.

Gas Runner is available on the App Store for $0.99.

Nifty idea. The only glitch I see is that using this app in the States would incur roaming data charges for the average user.

It would only be like 1 or 2 cents per use if you already have a regular data plan… Maybe not even that much 😛 Still worth it for comparing the costs

There is an option to enter the exchange rate manually on the settings page within the app. You could always set it before you go over the line if it was a concern. Otherwise you can select your carrier in the settings on the phone. If you’re close to the border you can often get your local provider even when you’re on the other side PF the line.

Don’t understand why such a simple program has to cost money? All you have to do to calculate the price difference is to check the rate before you cross the border, which can be done with many free apps, and then US$xRate/3.874=CAD$ per liter. Done!

Yup this works. You can even shorten it to:
    convert 3.29 usd/gallon to cad/l

Google calculator can replace a ton of apps out there… But who wants to Google something when an app looks so much easier to use!

“only 99 cents”?? In Apple Store, you can buy a lot more useful apps or songs with “only 99 cents”.

My point is that Apple has already provided the app for free on your iPhone. It’s called “calculator”. If you don’t wanna generate roaming data and you have to manually entre the rate before you cross border, what the difference is from entering the rate manually on the calculator? 99 cents will only save me from tapping a few more keys is simply not worth it.

By the way, I do grocery shopping across border every other week and fill up my gas tank at same time at Costco. I don’t really care how much it is because I know that I can always save at least 40 cents per liter doesn’t matter what the price and currency rate are. I have not filled up gas in Canada since the price went over 90 cents per liter.

Well are you really going to go the the US and not fill up gas on the way back?  It’s almost always cheaper there.  All you have to do before leaving is google something like 1.285 cad/l in usd/gallon and see that as long as gas in the US is cheaper than 5.03 dollars per gallon then you’re saving money.

  • Anonymous

John, that is why I left another reply here. Just go up a little bit and you will see it.

I will never fill up gas here in Canada as long as the oil companies don’t drop the price accordingly. 40 cents per litre of difference is insane. Imagine how much extra profit they are making everyday.

They’re all gone:-(  That’s too bad. I live in Windsor but work in Detroit so I cross back and forth every day. This would have been cool to have but I’ve yet to see gas cheaper in Canada. It hasn’t happened in my 32 years of life and honestly, I’m not holding my breath. Being able to convert the price using the exchange rate of the day though will just allow us to put an exact dollar figure to just how much we as Canadians get hosed at the pumps. I filled up today for $3.45/gallon but the posted price in Windsor is still $1.25/litre. Pffft.
