Target Employees: ‘Wirkn’ iPhone App Guarantees Replacement Job in 90 Days

By now you’ve probably heard Target Canada is cutting their losses and exiting the Canadian retail landscape by shutting down its 133 stores. For 17,600 Target employees, they will get a four month severance package if they stay until the very end, but what does the future hold after that?

Toronto-based startup Wirkn looks to help Target employees find a new replacement job via their mobile platform aimed at retail and hospitality workers. The startup is guaranteeing a replacement job for Target Canada workers in 90 days and if not successful, they’ll get a “package of career counselling, resume writing, digital recruitment training and other support services valued at up to $2,000 per person for free.”

wirkn job application

Instead of traditional job searching techniques such as handing out paper resumes, Wirkn allows job seekers to post online profiles with 30-second videos showcasing themselves to prospective employers. It’s a mobile-centric approach that looks to change the way retail and hospitality workers look for jobs. By utilizing your device’s location, job seekers can easily find openings around them.

The startup was founded by former VP from Aldo HR, Francois Jobin, who brought in the founder of RedFlagDeals, Derek Szeto, as CEO last fall. He noted “This is one of the largest retail layoffs in recent Canadian history and we need companies large and small across Canada to step up and help the employees.”

Szeto explains via email “Nothing is out there to address this market of shift-based retail and hospitality workers, especially on the candidate side, so we’ve created it. Mobile is the perfect platform to be able to get them engaged and is certainly the candidate’s screen of choice.”

Wirkn is also looking to hire one ambassador from each Target location to help spread their “Wirkn for Target Staff” campaign. This looks like the perfect timing for Wirkn to target retail workers looking for a replacement job.

Interesting. I like how they used imagery from one of the biggest YouTube stars for their ad art. Somehow I doubt it was with permission, lol.

Derek from Wirkn here. Gary reached out to me. I asked the team and they used https://randomuser.me/ to generate the initial images used for the site but we also passed it through a designer so that’s likely where the image was swapped and as a result we used it by accident without permission.

Appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We’ve gone ahead and changed it.

Not to sound crass, but if you were working in retail at Target, you can probably land another retail job at a similar big box somewhere else with relative ease. I’m not saying this from ignorance. I’ve worked retail, it’s the easiest place in the job market to find work. This app isn’t going to get you the job. The fluidity and high turnover of the retail sector will get you a job sooner or later, likely in less than 90 days.

Also, I’m guessing the “$2,000 support services package” includes an appointment at a government run Services Canada depot.
