60% Of iPhone Users In U.S. & Canada Have Already Updated To iOS 6
After just two weeks of its release, 60% of iPhones in U.S. and Canada have already been updated to iOS 6, Apple’s latest operating system, according to updated numbers released today by advertising and analytics firm Chitika (via CNET).
With over half of iPhone owners in North America running iOS 6 on their handsets, iPad users trail at 45% and iPod users at 39%, suggests the report. Previously, the firm reported that merely 24 hours after iOS 6 was released, 15% of iOS users had already updated to the newest OS.
“Overall, this data points to Apple doing an outstanding job of keeping their user base up-to-date with the latest OS,” Chitika said in a blog post.
“By comparison, Google’s latest data shows only 22 percent of its users being on its two most recent versions of Android.”
Apple released iOS 6 to the general public on September 19th with over 200 new features including brand new Maps app, enhanced Siri functionality such as more information about movies, restaurants, and sports scores, deep Facebook integration and more.
The update can be installed on iPhone 3GS and newer, the iPod Touch 4th generation and newer, and the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad models.

That is shocking news to me. Considering just how bad the new maps are I myself am not updating until there is an improvement. Logging into Google via Safari is not the same thing as having a useful maps app.
Why are Canadians updating?
From all the bad rap the new maps have been getting you would think that it doesn’t even open. In reality I have had no problems with maps and frankly it’s one of my favorite new features. Not so much the fly over but the fact there is turn by turn directions and the way it integrates into the OS like no other. Before you hate on the new maps, try it. Don’t be a follower. Some people are just too critical. Brings me back to every other update apple has ever put out. The week of, there is always numerous complaints about something but I have always updated the first day and never experienced anything like what people said. Not everything can be perfect but the new maps is not a bust like everyone makes it out to be.
They were very bad for me. At one point it had no idea where I was. I started scrolling through the maps to find my way back when I was lost and it couldn’t load the map said “Area not available”. I have had bad experiences with the maps, but at the same time barely ever use my maps feature so don’t really care all that much.
I wish I didn’t given the Bluetooth issues I am having. Can’t even have my phone in my pocket anymore. The music cuts out like crazy.
…and 27% of those users have been reported lost/missing. (prerequisite Apple Maps joke.)
Actually, I’ve not really used Maps much so I can’t complain there. I have noticed that I can get iOS 6 to crash almost on demand just by trying to arrange icons. With a fairly high rate of occurence, the space created by my moving of the icon does not ‘fill in.’ After I place the icon in its new position, iOS will restart. What is really frustrating is if you have done a series of movements, all those moves are undone when the crash occurs. Not a huge issue but what a pain it was when I was setting up my phone as new and re-arranging all my apps and folders.
So does that mean the other 40% are waiting on a jailbreak? My 3GS is still on 4.3.3… I see no reason to upgrade.
The other 40% still haven’t upgraded to iOS 5.0 because they either don’t know how or don’t care. Ask my sister. Ask my wife. Unless the updates are forced they just use their iPhones. We aren’t normal users. None of us. lol
I regretted that I upgraded to iOS6. I told my family and friends “don’t do it”.
I won’t upgrade my wife iPhone as long as it still functions properly.
They say 60% but wonder how many of those regretted doing the update..
And yet I read that despite this significant uptake, a vast number have – once trying the Apple Maps app – dropped it from use and are using an alternative instead.
