Apple Posts iCloud Transition FAQ

Share:

In my continued search to find out more information about what will happen to my precious MobileMe account and online data, Apple has now posted an updated page answering many of the questions that users have been asking.

If you have had concerns about the migration from MobileMe to iCloud, this webpage explains which existing MobileMe services will be present in iCloud and which are being expired.

According to the webpage, it looks like Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Find My iPhone, and Back To My Mac will be available in iCloud. These six apps will join the new iCloud-specific services iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books, and Backup and restore.

However, existing MobileMe services such as iDisk, Gallery, Mac-based sync services, and iWeb published websites are supported until June 30 2012. When iCloud kicks in, the former services are gone.

The webpage also confirms that iCloud features will be accessible from a web browser this fall when the service launches.

Check out the full FAQ page here.

  • Severely disappointed that the gallery is going away. That was one of the main reasons why I initially got MobileMe. I don’t like the photostream idea, I don’t want all my photos blasted across the web, I prefer the galleries. I did use the iDisk occasionally but not often. Will have to look to other places to replace those 2 features.

One question I have not seen answered is how is the free 5GB going to be enough for all your data including backup?
“iCloud includes 5GB of free storage for mail, documents, and
backup, which should be enough for most users. Purchased music, apps,
and books do not count against this 5GB of storage, nor do the photos in
    your Photo Stream.”
I have a 32GB iPhone and most of the music on there is not purchased on iTunes so I’m sure a backup even excluding the things mentioned will be over 5GB.

I believe you can buy additional storage. Though I am not 100% certain of
this, or how much may be purchased.

This is gonna suck a lot for me.

I used iDisk a lot, i had a folder on my mac to which everything would automatically get synced to mobile me. I currently have more than 10gigs worth of stuff on there including big projects, and backups of my computer.

Music does not count against that 5gb, nor do the apps. Just app data, preferences, bookmarks, photos… everything else I believe

It says in their FAQ “Purchased music” which would mean music purchased in iTunes which they will have on the iCloud and you can download again. As I said in my post, most (90%) of the music on my iPhone is not purchased through iTunes so it should be included in the backup. I’m not sure how much app data there is on my iPhone but I would assume not too much.

You won’t be able to backup your music to icloud anyways snice you didn’t buy it via iTunes
