Rogers iPhone 3G S Launch = EPIC FAIL, Part Deux

“History repeats itself.” That’s one quote you hear over and over, and I think it’s safe to apply this to yesterday’s less than stellar iPhone 3G S launch by Rogers. Last year, Canadians lined up coast to coast to get their hands on the first ever iPhone launched in Canada. You would think Rogers would have learned from their experiences a year ago, but unfortunately this is not the case.

Learning From Last Year’s Mistakes, Right? NAWTTT (insert Borat voice)!

Last year, the systems required for activating iPhones crashed around 9AM PST. Okay fine, so it was a major launch worldwide and Rogers was unprepared for the load on their systems. Fast forward to yesterday, and around 12PM PST, the systems crashed yet again!

While people had to wait and also have their iPhone 3G S units “on hold”, the bigger picture is not the systems crashing. It was more about the misinformed, confused, and stressed Rogers employees. You may recall that Rogers only announced their upgrade pricing 12 hours before the launch.

By doing so, their employees only had minutes before their shifts to grasp the new, complex upgrade policies and be able to explain them in layman’s terms to customer over and over again. This was the situation I found myself in yesterday on my quest towards my iPhone 3G S.

My Initial iPhone 3G S Upgrade Experience–Not Very Fun

I decided to visit the Rogers Plus store located nearby on Broadway/Arbutus in Vancouver. Although I had an iPhone 3G S “on hold” at a farther location, I decided to see if I could test the waters nearby first–boy, was that ever a mistake!

Upon entering the store around 3:30PM, I had to wait 15 minutes to get to the counter, which wasn’t extremely busy at the time. Once I got there, I explained that I wanted to do a HUP (Hardware Upgrade) on my wife’s account and buy the iPhone 3G S. My wife’s retention plan is worth keeping and extending for a couple more years since it works out to $30 after taxes/SAF for a plan that includes 200 daytime, 6PM E/W, CID, 100 LD, and 125 SMS.

Thinking About Long Term Savings with Another GSM Carrier for my iPhone

I didn’t want to extend my 3 year contract into a 4 year contract. My iPhone 3G plan is okay, but not the best and I want the choice to switch to other GSM carriers when they are setup here. Adding another year was not an option for me.

In the end, the rep said that there was no way they were going to sell me an iPhone 3G S. Why? Because my voice plan was less than $35/month and I wasn’t willing to commit to a 3 year data plan. She had a Rogers rep on the phone tell her this and that was final. This was today’s policy for everybody.

Wow. So Rogers has decided today’s launch would be about committing everyone who wanted an iPhone 3G S to $35/3yr data. I knew this information was false, so I quickly left the store, dejected and frustrated about my time wasted there.

Fast forward, X1Zero and his team of ninjas helped get me setup with a black 16GB iPhone 3G S, even though I didn’t meet the so called “terms” stated above. So, I have my iPhone 3G S and let’s just say I’m happy now. :)

Germapino:
I called Rogers and the ignorant young chick told me my upgrade would be $470 for an upgrade to the 3GS 32MB.
I told her she was wrong. She said the computer never lies.
I called again. 10 min wait. Informed woman said it’ll be $274 for 3GS 32MB.
Ensure you get someone who knows what’s going on. 1/2 the people there just learned about the 3GS during the first 15 mins of their shift.

Tommy:
I’m so disappointed today. I currently have a smartphone, so just to be sure I kept calling Rogers all week asking if I was eligible for the 3GS and the answer I kept getting was ‘yes’. Now come today I get to a Rogers store and I am told I’m not eligible. Then I call Rogers and they say I’m not eligible because I have a smartphone and I haven’t achieved the 2 years hardware upgrade status yet. When I joined Rogers just over a year ago they said hardware upgrade eligibility was 1 year. I’m totally, totally disappointed.

Jack:
Just thought I would share my story with everyone of trying to upgrade my 3G phone this morning. Like many, I got my 3G on July 11, 2008, and I was thrilled to find out that I qualified for $500 off the no-term price (see offer #2 above) – which means my 32GB Iphone 3GS would be $299. I went to the local Rogers store this morning with a print out of the offer from the Rogers website. In short – the store had never heard of the offer. They even had to call customer service and fax them my print out – and they still wouldn’t honour the offer. After a 90 minute ordeal, I left with no iPhone. I called cust service from home and had to read them the url of the offer on their own website. After being placed on hold for a while, they told me that they would honour the website special and are now sending me the iphone 3GS 32GB for $299. Beware of ignorant Rogers employees!

Positive Experiences Happened Too Of Course

Now, not all was negative about the launch. Lots of people did encounter competent and informed employees which enabled them to upgrade without a hitch. So the launch wasn’t that big of a FAIL, but still, you would think a large corporation like Rogers would be prepared for an iPhone launch by now. Let’s hope that maybe Rogers will actually learn from this for the future.

So if you’re still trying to nab an iPhone 3G S, my advice would be to find a rep that knows all the policies. People have had a lot of success calling over the phone to upgrade. If you encounter a bad rep, just hang up and try again.

As for the iPhone 3G S, my initial experience with the phone is WOW. The speed upgrade makes it painful to use my iPhone 3G. Every single aspect of the OS is now silky smooth like butter, with absolutely no delays compared to the 3G. Editing video can’t get any easier plus the instant upload to YouTube is pretty awesome. Expect a mini review to come!

Funny, I purchased an iphone 3g used and ported my # from koodo to rogers in february, and made sure I got a plan and everything that would not have any type of contract associated with it. Just checked online to see if I can get the 3gs and it says I havent been a customer for a year yet, so im not eligable for a hup. If they are gonna make all these weird offers etc, they should have it available in all places, not just in the heads of their moron employees.

Unfortunately, because of a Rogers system glitch, after waiting over an hour in line, and another 45 minutes for the store employee to get through on the phone, there is a glitch in their system that says, because I did a warranty replacement of my iPhone 3G, that they are only able to mail me one.

They said that this should be cleared up by Monday and I can probably pick a phone up at the store. So basically about 2 hours of waiting to find out that I can’t have my new iPhone until Monday.

The Rogers store employee was just as frustrated as me. This was rediculous. Because Rogers sold me a defective iPhone last year, I am put through HUGE inconvenience this year. Unacceptable Rogers!

Fido has the best customer service of all cellphone carriers!

Sadly it seems that YOU had false information about Fido’s upgrade program for the iPhone 3GS.

All the info that you needed to know was easily accessible from this blog so you should only blame yourself, not others.

Half a dozen Rogers wireless stores in Victoria never received phones and are still without them on Saturday. Apparently they’re coming on Monday. Again, bullshit.

I went to the Arbutus-Vancouver store after 6pm. By then all possible fallacies by the staff there had already occurred and they were better informed about the 3GS and the upgrade plans. I added a new phone (porting from Bell) to my existing account and everything took less than 15 mins (there was a 15 minute lineup though, so technically 30 mins). Everyone was demanding a black 32G, but having prior experience with the fingerprint magnet I had very early on decided on the white model. There was plenty of white 32Gb phones and I was a happy camper 30mins after I entered the store :) The key is to let the Rogers reps learn from their previous mistakes and that makes your transition smooth.

Just got back from very smooth experince at Eaton Centre. they have just received a shipment G3 S all models. As much as I like to bitch about Rogers, $500 off the retail made it a pretty easy deal to make for me. Especially an 8GB, use it heavily, and was getting tired of charging and slow operating speed. Particularly impressed with email speed, the smudge proof screen and the increased picture quality. A fun app like Koi Pond performs a such an increased level that it really feels like a whole new phone. The Rogers guy [Alain] was courteous, helpful and fast.

    Where do I start?

I had an 8:00pm appointment with the Apple Store downtown Vancouver, I called them regularly to check on the availability of Fido-branded 32Gb Black phones. “still a go”. I explained to each phone rep that I am an existing customer and will be upgrading with the special price-offer.

I arrived early for my appointment– I’m kinda weird that way– actually, it was really early. I was talking with the “wall of orange-shirted apple staff” by 6pm instead of 8. They suggested that we stand in the walk-in lineup to see if it gets us in faster than waiting till 8. It was great. They were fun, friendly, and even offered bottled water to my wife and I.

That is when it went wrong. One of the reps came by to ask what we were doing and when I said upgrading a 3G into a 3Gs, she explained that Rogers has cancelled their ability to sell the units with the special pricing offers.

I ended up, at the Apple Store Manager’s suggestion, walking to the Fido dealer at the end of the mall… Waiting for 65 minutes, only to have the guy 2 people in front of me get the last 32gb phone. (I should say that when I first arrived, they said there were “plenty of phones”)

Disgusted, I walked back to my wife who insisted on staying in the lineup at the Apple Store for me. (she is great)

We were next in line by the time I got there. We walked into the store 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment.

The “blue shirt” apple person helped me. He explained that their system couldn’t apply the discounts, but that he might still be able to sell me a phone.

We tried. It took a while. and a few extra “darker blue shirted” staff and finally the phone was on my account. I paid full bang for it, but the fido rep on the phone said I could go into any fido store with the receipt and get credit applied to my bill.

I was really frustrated. Apple kept telling me there was no problem and to come on down. When I arrived, “Rogers and Fido was changing the rules on us minute-by-minute” (that was a direct quote from the manager at the Apple Store)

I’m really disappointed in how Rogers and Fido (that means Rogers, of course) handled this for the second time around. I can’t wait until the competition kicks in. At least I managed to NOT extend my contract. At least I managed to GET the 3Gs, and at least I didn’t have to kill any Fido, Rogers, Apple staff in order for it to happen. Even better, I didn’t have to hang myself at the end of it… but only barely.

3Gs phone is okay. Would I race out and buy one if I wasn’t trying to develop software for it… probably not. But… there we go.

(sorry for the wall of text here, but I’ve got lots to say about this process… and I’ve managed to hold much of my comments back)

Got the only 32gb white from a local dealer. Rough experience but with help of Rob Manne I was able to get the mistakes the dealer made corrected. The new phone is worth the upgrade IMO and the rogers offices have my appreciation for helping me out. I wish dealers would be more knowledgeable of what they sell.

Apart from their systems being dreadfully slow, I had a good experience. Waited maybe 5 minutes in line to find out they had one left. I’m on a corporate plan, so I expected a hassle. I had phoned the business office in advance, and was told $499 for the 16GB. In the store, he told me the exact same thing.

After wrestling with the system for over an hour, the guy pulled off the sale and I walked out happy.

The interesting part – he said they had only received 4 phones! I guess the demand was lower this time around, since I got number 4 at about 2:30PM.

i booked an iphone 3gs at the apple store yesterday went in to pick it up at 3 and came out 5 hours later but i did manage to get one. Apple employees had great customer service but it was rogers and infact fido too that was the problem. due to rogers and fido releasing there prices and policies on the last minute the upgrade software was not available to apple employees and to activate the phone they had to call in i saw a few people buy the phone outright just cause it was taking so long . i am not even joking, the guy helping me was on the phone for 1 hour 45 mins after which he got through and rogers said i couldnt upgrade due to some new policy. then i called in and figured it out the guy called back and bam another 2 hours and hes still on the phone at the end of it i did get one but wow it took a lot of patience on my part and the apple employeess.
People learn from their mistakes but rogers bloody does’nt a**holes !!!!!!!
on another note the phone is amazing to use still learning how to use the compass in maps properly for some reason its not that acurate.

I wasn’t upgrading, but making the dreaded jump back to the Rogers world. I only got out ten months ago…but I couldn’t resist the iPhone any longer. At least I’m with Fido, which makes me feel slightly better, even if they are a roger’s counterpart. It’s funny there were so many lines. I got my phone in Nanaimo, BC. Went to Costco first, they had no 32 gig phones, not because they sold out, they just didn’t get them. I found a 32gig white at the mall’s wireless wave. Went v. smoothly. No lines. No hassle.

Went v. smoothly. No lines. No hassle.

    wow – now I’m really confused –

I’m paying like $100 a month – I have Rogers “iPhone” data/voice plan – but it seems like you’re paying a lot less. Trying to figure out their plan options is proving to be near impossible. (i was told if I make any changes to my plan – which I have – that they start your 3 year contract over !)

Anyone got any advice – I rarely use voice calls but I’m using Twitter, Email, and Text messaging frequently.

I JUST got my iPhone 3G about 4 months ago (before I heard anything about the 3G S) so I’m guessing (based on all I’ve read) that I’m not even gonna be close to qualifying for any reasonable upgrade to the 3G S?

Called around and asked if anywhere had White 32GB’s. Couldn’t find any, but got the last 32GB that Rogers Plus had.
Took an hour or so for the Rogers Server to work, at 2pm.
    My5Local+6GBdata.
The only problem other than the server was that the 6GB plan wasn’t on the site for them. They added the 1GB plan and fixed it for me this morning.

    I’m one happy customer.
The staff at North Bay,ON’s Rogers Plus in Northgate are great. Good sense of humor too.

How did you get them to honour the option #2 deal? I couldn’t convince them and went ahead anyway hoping I could get reimbursed later after calling in to customer support

Hey, why would a new customer choose Rogers instead of Fido?

I’m going through the web pages online and it’s always seems much cheaper monthly on Fido – especially if you want called ID, and don’t need more than 200 minutes daytime.

btw, is it normal that the 6GB data plan is not available online on fido.ca
