Telus Finalizes Student Plans, Adds $55 Option

As the summer comes to a close and the back-to-school seasons arrives, the Canadian wireless carriers have started to release their Student Plans. This week, Telus has finalized their student plans with two offers, both iPhone compatible.

Telus Student Plans

This summer, students have, among the other Telus plans, two specific student plans available to them. Both plans include data, so the plans work great on iPhone and both plans are available only on a 3-year agreement. Details are as follows:

$40.00 Student Plan

  • Minutes: 200 daytime minutes
  • Data: 100MB
  • Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited at 6PM
  • Unlimited Features Included: Unlimited text, picture, video messages & Unlimited Nationwide talk and text to 10 numbers
  • Calling Features Included: Visual Voicemail, Call Waiting, Conference Calling

The $40 plan is not bad, except that 100MB of data would not be good for an iPhone. Then again, if you can keep under 100MB, which is not a lot, then all the power to you.

$55.00 Student Plan

  • Minutes: 200 daytime minutes
  • Data: 1GB
  • Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited at 6PM
  • Unlimited Features Included: Unlimited text, picture, video messages & Unlimited Nationwide talk and text to 10 numbers
  • Calling Features Included: Visual Voicemail, Call Waiting, Conference Calling

The $50 plan adds $15 over the previous student offer and increases the data by 900MB. This plan is comparable with the standard $50 voice and data plan from Telus that includes 500MB of data and does not include both unlimited text/picture/video and My10 Nationwide.

Between the two student offers, the $55 option seems to offer more value, especially for an iPhone. The student plans are available now and will require student identification from a Canadian post-secondary institution. The plans are also available to existing Telus customers if they meet the student requirement and renew their account on a 3-year agreement.

would telus iphones work on sasktel or not?

  • Mike

If only that $55 package was $60… then it would be eligible for that bonus 5 GB of data. It's why I upgraded from the $50 to $65. The extra 5 numbers would be nice (I never said I was a student, maybe I could get them anyway?)

  • Throbbingego

Would be nice if they included a little more data (~500MB), but as a student in a city full of Wifi, I don't really need data.

  • SHIN

I called Telus to switch my iPhone 50 plan to this. They said its was only for “mobile phones” and select smart phones. NOT the iphone.

    Its on their site.

  • stefan

can these work for high school students

You seem to be right… although I don't see the use of 1GB of data on something other than a smart phone.

    From the Telus site:
For $40 plan: All mobile phones on a 3 year term.
INQ Chat on a 2 year term (in-store only).
Select Smartphones on a 3 year term (in-store only): Nokia E72, Nokia E71, HTC Snap, LG New Chocolate, Samsung Advance, HTC Hero.
For $55 plan: All mobile phones on a 3 year term
INQ Chat on a 2 year term

I just hung up with retention and got the student 55 deal + free display with a iphone 4. I think this is a pretty sweet deal.

    Good luck

will bell get these same plans…if not can i just tell them to match the rate, will they do that?

  • BlogReader

My take on this is that it doesnt apply to the iphone.

$40 plan says “All mobile phones on a 3 year term.
INQ Chat on a 2 year term (in-store only).
Select Smartphones on a 3 year term (in-store only): Nokia E72, Nokia E71, HTC Snap, LG New Chocolate, Samsung Advance, HTC Hero.”

$55 plan says “All mobile phones on a 3 year term INQ Chat on a 2 year term”

So the $55 plan, in spite of the generous 1GB of data, is only for mobile phones.

    Hi Friend
Kindly provide the details of $ 55 Plan

  • Al

same thing as described above … 200 minutes, unlimited after 6pm, Unlimited text, picture, video messages, Unlimited Nationwide talk and text to 10 numbers, 1go of data, 3 voicemail, conference call and finally got call display on top of that. All of the above for 55+tax.

  • IocanePowder

    Anyone else have any luck?

I'm going to call customer service tomorrow and see if they can help “convince” me to pick them over Bell or Rogers.

  • djepsilon

Funny how I have the exact same plan as the $55 one with Rogers (except I have 6GB of data) and my monthly bill is $100….

  • Sa

  • aleclerc

Did everyone have to renew for 3 years? Does this affect when you can upgrade?

  • Marisa

  • elhilayla

Viz post Secondary school is the MUST!

  • elhilayla

  • elhilayla

    Yes & Yes

  • Perhillion

Telus will activate your unlocked iPhone off contract on the Student 55 plan. Just contact the Twitter guy (@TelusSupport). Cite the recent Globe and Mail article where Telus says all of their plans are available with and without a contract. Just go get a Telus micro sim and you’re set!

  • Skgjjskd

For anyone wondering for sure if this plan is available for the iPhone, yes it is. I have it. They also say they require proof of student ID but they don’t, so feel free to get this plan even if you are not a student. Seems like the best deal out there right now.

  • Wingnut

I was at a Telus store in Ottawa today and the girl there told me anyone can get the Student plan…
