How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS/4 & iPod Touch 3G/4G On 4.1 greenpois0n Guide

Looking to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or iPod Touch 3G/4G? You have come to the right place!

NOTE: THIS GUIDE WILL NOT UNLOCK YOUR iPHONE

What is ‘Jailbreaking’?

Jailbreaking is a term used that refers to modifying the software on your iPhone/iPod touch. These modifications essentially “free” your device from the device constraints and allow you to do functions such as applying custom wallpapers, changing the way the icons look, modifying text message tones, changing the device sounds, and about 1 million other things. The list is endless. The image below is an example of what you can do with a jailbroken iPhone/iPod touch:

Jailbreaking is accomplished by using programs such as ‘greenpois0n’ (listed below). Once you do jailbreak however, it is not permanent. At any time you can restore your iPhone/iPod touch to factory defaults and return the device back to ‘normal’. However until you do the restore, your device will stay jailbroken. Also, it goes without saying that this voids your warranty, but when you restore to factory defaults, the traces of jailbreaking are usually cleaned up.

If you want to know more about Jailbreaking, you can read all about it here.

What is ‘Unlocking’?

The wireless carriers in Canada, such as Rogers and Fido, put “carrier locks” on their devices. What this does is prevent you from using the device on another wireless network. For example, you cannot take a Rogers device and put a Fido SIM card into it and vice versa.

Using similar methods to jailbreaking, one can unlock their iPhone (unless you bought your iPhone 3GS/4 at a Canadian Apple Store for full price unlocked). This allows you to “free” your device and allows the user to put any SIM card into the device. For example, if you unlock your Rogers iPhone, you can now put a Fido SIM in, or AT&T or O2 or whoever.

Unlocking is accomplished by using programs such as ‘ultrasn0w’. Once you do the unlock however, it is not permanent. At any time you can restore your iPhone to factory defaults and return the device back to ‘normal’. However until you do the restore, your device will stay unlocked. Also, it goes without saying that this voids your warranty, but when you restore to factory defaults, the traces of the unlock are usually cleaned up.

If you want to know more about Unlocking, you can read all about it here.

***Read Me Before Continuing***

Before we begin, please take some time to review the notes below as they are very important:

- If you plan on unlocking your iPhone 3GS/4 in the future, do not jailbreak your iPhone using the guide below.

- If you already have a FACTORY UNLOCKED IPHONE PURCHASED FROM A CANADIAN APPLE STORE AT FULL PRICE, then you can jailbreak your iPhone using the guide below.

- The methods listed below can be followed on BOTH a PC or a MAC

- Your iPhone/iPod touch must be updated to firmware 4.1 via iTunes before beginning this process.

- Ensure your iTunes is the latest version.

– Your iPhone/iPod touch must be activated and NOT in the “Connect to iTunes” screen or “Emergency Call” screen.

- For users that already have a jailbroken device and want to keep their jailbroken apps, before you begin the process below, download “AptBackup” from Cydia and back up your jailbroken apps. Now connect your device to iTunes and backup your device using the iTunes backup process. After you do the jailbreak process below, redownload AptBackup from Cydia and plug your device into your computer. Using AptBackup, restore your apps.

The Jailbreak Methods

Below you will find detailed guides (so you do not miss any steps) of how to jailbreak an iPhone or an iPod Touch. There are three sections:

To jailbreak your iPhone 3GS/4 on the 4.1 firmware, follow the steps below:

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 3GS/4

1.) Plug your iPhone into iTunes, do a backup and then click “Update” to install firmware 4.1. After the update, eject your iPhone from iTunes using the “eject” button, close iTunes and turn the device off.

2.) Click on the PC or Mac links to download greenpois0n for PC or MAC (coming). Save the file to your computer desktop.

3.) Locate the downloaded file and double-click on it to open the application. You may need to extract the file by double-clicking on the .ZIP file.

4.) With the greenpois0n application open and your iPhone connected, but powered off, click “Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU)“.

5.) You will now follow the instructions to place your iPhone into DFU mode:

  • Press & Hold the Sleep button for 2 seconds
  • Continue holding the Sleep button and press and hold the Home Button for 10 seconds
  • Release the Sleep Button and continue to hold the Home Button for 15 seconds

6.) When the iPhone is in DFU mode, click on the “Jailbreak” button in greenpois0n. Your iPhone will now be jailbreaking.

7.) After the process is complete, click on “Quit” in greenpois0n.

8.) Eventually your iPhone will reboot. Upon reboot, a new “Loader” app will be on the Home Screen. Tap on the “Loader” app, tap on Cydia and then tap on “Install Cydia“. When prompted, tap “Remove” to remove the Loader app from the iPhone. Tap the Home button and the iPhone will reboot.

To do so, follow the steps below:

1.) Open iTunes and plug your iPhone 3GS/4 or iPod touch 3G/4G in via the USB. Backup your iPhone/iPod touch if iTunes allows you to.

2.) When iTunes recognizes the iPhone/iPod touch, click on the “Restore” button in iTunes. This will restore your iPhone/iPod touch with fresh 4.1 firmware.

3.) After the restore is complete, iTunes will prompt you to Set up a New Device or Restore from Back Up from an existing backup (the backup from step 1). Choose which ever method you want and let iTunes process.

4.) After the processing is complete, your iPhone/iPod touch will be loaded with the fresh 4.1 firmware or loaded with your back up that you may have chosen.

5.) Eject the iPhone/iPod Touch from iTunes using the “eject” button in iTunes and disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone/iPod touch. Turn the iPhone/iPod touch off and then turn the iPhone/iPod touch back on.

any thoughts and suggestion on the diff between greenpois0n and limera1n? (perhaps only the fact that limera1n has a bad image of releasing it early to screw other iphone hackers?)

Minor point…you can indeed use unlocking software on a factory unlocked phone. You don’t need to, but there’s nothing stopping you. Also, there are various ways to disable Ultrasnow without a restore (including a rather handy SBSettings toggle). I find it easier to explain unlocking iPhones as an app that you can run that allows you to use other SIMs…it’s sufficiently different than the process with other phones that this analogy works better.

  • Jessefrank

I have an issue here and if somebody can help that would be awesome.
The sleep button on my 3GS is about 99% busted. It’s sucks for many reasons.
Here’s the thing though: I want to jailbreak, so I can tweak Activator to remap button commands to bypass the sleep button, but both limera1n and green pois0n require me to use the sleep button to jailbreak. Any help would be welcome :).

    HELP! NO SERVICE AFTER JAILBREAK!

JB’ed word for word as above. After installing some apps from cydia I realized I had no service (not sure when I lost the service, but definitely worked before JB). Have since removed each downloaded cydia package and RESTORED TO NORMAL word for word as above. Still no service. I have a factory unlocked from apple, less than two months old, iphone 4. I’ve tried using a different carrier sim, resetting network settings, resetting all settings, rebooting, re-synching… nothing seems to work!

    Please help, I’m hooped!

  • Caboobies

Update: somehow through the use of pwnage tool and NUMEROUS restores I’ve got my service back! What a pain in the ass. Afterall that I’m wondering if the makeitmine app that changes the carrier name was the culprit? Anyone else experience that with a factory unlocked iPhone 4???

  • Tintin-haddock

Why did the Virgin Mobile Canada Customer Service agent say that if I bought an iphone through them, I could not, down the road, use that iphone to start up a service in the US when I move down there?

    Thank-you!!
