WSJ: Next iPad mini Likely to Have Retina Display, Possibly Coloured Back Covers

The WSJ has come out to say Apple’s next iPad mini will likely have a Retina display, made by Samsung, according to its sources.

Apple is working with suppliers in Asia on its next iPad mini with a high-resolution “retina” display, unlike the current iPad mini that comes with a lower-resolution screen, the people said. The size of the new tablet will likely be the same as the current 7.9-inch model, which was released in November last year. Apple has also been contemplating multiple color back covers for the new tablet, they said.

Suppliers such as Sharp and LG Display will also ship screens along with Samsung to Apple for the next iPad mini. The decision to source Samsung for displays, according to sources, was made to ensure enough screens would be available. Existing iPad mini screens are from LG Display and Taiwan’s AU Optronics.

The Journal speculates an iPad mini with Retina display is likely to appear after Google announced its new Nexus 7 last week, which sports a high resolution display.

Although Apple has tried to distance itself from rival Samsung, existing suppliers are still unable to meet the volume and quality Apple demands, hence the following statement from AU Optronics:

“We cannot take [Apple’s] orders because our rate of output efficiency is too low to be profitable,” said a manager at AU Optronics. He noted the company doesn’t make a profit from manufacturing current iPad mini screens.

Earlier today it was discovered within iOS 7 the next generation iPad mini could lack a Retina display, based on the analysis of code strings, sometimes an indicator of what’s to come–or not.

They need to have retina otherwise what’s the point. I love my mini and the only thing it’s missing is the retina.

Gary, the site has become so overrun with ads it’s ridiculous, they literally just in the way of the articles and just keep jumping over the text every time I scroll, which is every 3 seconds to try and read what’s underneath the ad. Please fix this. I understand you need revenue from ads but this is ridiculous.
    Sincerely, a long time reader

There’s starting to be a pattern here:

Monday = iPad mini will have Retina display
Tuesday = nothing on iPad mini
Wednesday = iPad mini might not have Retina display
Thursday = nothing on iPad mini
Friday = iPad mini will probably have Retina display
Saturday = We think iPad should come with Retina dispaly
    Sunday = Off

The complaint is about how they are degrading the experience. I frequently trigger an ad while I’m just trying to scroll on the iPad mini. They really are in the way. Although the funny thing is, the ads that are in the way, are also the less ugly ads. So I haven’t said anything, but hopefully in the near future the ads will be pretty and non-intrusive πŸ˜›

I think an iPad mini with coloured backs, much like the iPod colours, would be pretty spiffy! It would make it that much more tempting to upgrade πŸ™‚

  • WatDah

Like that much more? Or tttttthhhhhhaaaaaatttttt much more?
Doesn’t matter, the case is gonna cover it anyways.

  • Erik Kappel

Haha, I’d say about half the length of your “ttthhhaaattt” much more πŸ˜‰ and well I don’t put a case on my ipad, my iphone yes, but I only need the smart cover with the ipad and I’m good, so I’d get to enjoy the colour all I please ;P

    Barebacking? Adventurous!

I have to agree. The new beta site has become increasingly annoying. In particular when reading on my iPhone. I get the ‘expand’ bar that I can’t close or move unless I hit refresh. Then it goes away. I too am a frequent reader and I trigger the ads frequently when trying to close them.

    Exactly my problem
