iOS 4.2 Beta 1 Released to Developers with AirPrint, AirPlay

Looks like iOS 4.2 Beta 1 has just been released to iPhone Developers. This new beta includes AirPrint and AirPlay, two much anticipated features for iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Apple PR Announces AirPrint Feature Coming Soon

Apple also released a statement revealing what AirPrint will bring to consumers:

AirPrint automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software. HP’s existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices.

“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC.”

This will be a welcome feature to all users, especially those workhorses on their iPads. iOS 4.2 is slated to be released in November, which many iPad users including myself have been anticipating forever. Expect new ‘features’ to be discovered as iOS 4.2 beta 1 hits more developers.

Wonder if they’ll bother fixing the remaining 3G bugs that are still left over in 4.1, heh. They improved input sluggishness a bit, but it still exists. Still getting lots of apps crashing when attempting to launch. Still getting apps being horribly unresponsive when you try scrolling. While typing input has improved, it is still missing keystrokes a lot of the time. Probably going to downgrade to 3.x again.

  • No word improving iPhone 3G speeds. As far as they are concerned the issue has been resolved.
A Lot of updated apps (games mostly) are startin to put in the desceiption that 3G iPhones and older itouchs are not supported (NHL 2011 for example)

I’m currently downloading 4.2 and depending of my findings I may come back to give a little feedback.

No more hardware orientation lock for iPad iOS4.2, it became sound mute. Lock is now on FW, same as all iDevices.

Fair enough that new games may not run properly on the older phones.. If they’re trying to take advantage of the new hardware they would be limited by also having to run well on the older hardware. It’s just the way it goes.

I hope Apple makes AirPrint to allow printing just like you can with all of the iPhone apps out there from Epson, Hp, and other can do.

I know the beta just came out today, but to me it looks like you can only print to a printer that is shared on a pc or mac. Which is not exactly what I had in mind… I was looking for more of something like the Epson iPrint app and HP ePrint app where you can print prics (and at a cost actual documents) from your iDevice.

  • An update for all you UDID Registered people who are not real Devs.
Make sure you have the Latest SDK and Xcode that is released with that iOS 4.2.
or you will run in to a error in itunes and will have to Restore back to 4.1.

  • So far my findings other then what has already been posted in main stream media is as follows

You can initiate a FaceTime call right from your SMS convo. additional buttons like contacts also placed at the top of the convo

Print button is now avalible in Safari. also in Camera Roll Photos beside copy, and share

Voice Memo app has a new icon.

GameCenter now has its own Notification Options.

Sound options: a toggle switch On/Off. ability to adjust iphone volume without changing the Alert n ringtone.
(Example. Turn up your iPhone music, without turning up your ringtone and alerts)
AirTunes Sits right beside your volume slider in ipod app (when Wifi is on) works with a singe click.
*will update more as i find them*
