“Spirit” – A New Userland Jailbreak

On the heels of the Pwn2Own competition, where we heard about two hackers who found a way to hack the iPhone, through an exploit in Mobile Safari, we are already seeing jailbreakers using a similar exploit to create a new jailbreak tool.

This comes form a dev known as “comex“. If you’re a Nintendo Wii modder, you may know this name. He is the fellow behind “BannerBomb“, which is a hack for the Wii that allows launching of the HomeBrew Channel.

Spirit is a userland jailbreak, similar to the old jailbreakme.com. It is provides a fully untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPod Touch, and maybe even the iPad. It will work on OS 3.1.3 and the newer bootrom. Presumably, you would just have to visit a predetermined website in Mobile Safari, tap a link, and you’re jailbroken. No details have been released, yet, but we’ll keep you up to date!

We also reported on Geohot’s new untethered jailbreak for the new bootrom on 3.1.3. Unlike this, his will be a software jailbreak. No release date for either of these. They are probably holding out for the iPad release, so thay can add iPad support, if it is able to be jailbroken.
