Rogers, Telus and Bell Comment on iPhone 5 Pre-Orders [Update]

Looks like Canada’s ‘Big 3’ carriers have had a blockbuster weekend for iPhone 5 pre-orders. Here are some statements provided to us by TELUS and Rogers via email:

TELUS:

“Pre-order sales over the weekend were great. We have seen a solid increase in orders from previous years which is likely due to the excellence of the TELUS pre-order system, our improvements over last year allow both existing and new customers to purchase in advance online or in-store. We want to ensure our clients have the best way to get a phone in their hand as quickly and as easily as possible.”

Rogers:

“Response has been phenomenal. While we can’t comment on specific numbers, we can say that it’s been one of the best releases to date. Customers seem to be really excited about the LTE functionality. Also, we’ve had great feedback to our limited time offer where we guarantee it will ship within two weeks or we’ll give you a $50 credit.”

Over at MobileSyrup, Bell told them the following:

“Interest in iPhone 5 has been so strong that we’ve closed pre-orders. We think people are excited to sign up with Bell because we offer the country’s largest LTE network and unique services like our leading Mobile TV offering.”

Earlier this morning, Apple announced over 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders took place in the first 24 hours. In the U.S., AT&T announced iPhone 5 pre-orders made it the fastest selling iPhone they’ve ever offered. You can soak in everything you need to know about iPhone 5 pre-orders here.

Update: Bell’s statement to us:

Interest in iPhone 5 has been so strong that we’ve closed pre-orders, in order to be sure that we could fulfill all pre-orders we received. We think people are excited to sign up with Bell because we offer the country’s largest LTE network and unique services like our leading Mobile TV offering. iPhone 5 will be available Friday Sept 21 at Bell stores, The Source, and online at Bell.ca (select stores will even be open early on launch day).

  • i just pre-ordered with Fido, the black 64gb version. They released the new options today instead of only the 16 gb ones.

  • What I don’t get Gary is that I used the Rogers reservation system on the 14th, am in the top 10 for a white iPhone 5 yet I might receive it 14 days after launch. What is the point of the reservation system? I mean I reserved one, charge me the 40$ fee I should get it at launch. I think they need to rethink this reservation system…your thoughts?

  • Yeah, it’s more of a system to hold a phone for you, but not necessarily guarantee by launch day. The $40 is a deposit so you will get it back (or applied to your account). Future Shop/Best Buy are guaranteeing phones for launch day.

  • I am keeping the faith though lol. I mean I’m like number 10 🙂 figure that should count for something!

I view it as a preorder that does not close when more are ordered than can be delivered for launch day. The lack of guarantee is just to cover them and they don’t want to credit you $50 if they are a couple days late. I was in position 617 but when they stopped showing my position and changed the status to “In Progress” my take is that means number doesn’t matter, expect it on launch day.
