WSJ: Apple “Looking Into” iOS 4 Problems With iPhone 3G

This week, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is “looking into” user reports of the iPhone 3G experiencing lags and crashes when updated to iOS 4.

Users of the iPhone 3G that have updated to iOS 4 will not be strangers to the complete device slow down.

At the Apple support pages, numerous discussion boards have been raging with users experiencing slow system responsiveness, battery drains, and overheating with their iPhone 3G on iOS 4.

With the WSJ reporting that Apple may release a possible fix in the future, this brings new hope to iPhone 3G owners.

There are also many complaints that the phone drains the battery quickly and becomes excessively hot. Concern about general problems such as slowness and battery life on gadgets isn’t unusual, but using iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G seems to make the problems so bad that the phone is nearly unusable for some people.

Apple recently began seeding a beta of iOS 4.1 (currently at beta 2), which has been reported to address many of the issues that iPhone 3G users are experiencing. At this time, iOS 4.1 seems to be the logical way to patch the iPhone 3G problems, unless Apple is looking to release another 4.0.x release.

Yes I’ve been facing all the mentioned issues that you can clearly see in this video (not mine, found it on YouTube): http://www.youtube.com/v/Pdk2cJpSXLg

Now for me I can safely go back to 3.1.2 thanks for the jailbroken device. That’s one of the best reasons to have your iPhone jailbraken, you feel you have total control to fix any possible issue, instead of constantly forever waiting for official fixes…

  • Phayzer

Wont be an issue for me after tomorrow :)

  • Mike

Its about damn time, i've already talked to apple and they even told me to just bring my 3G back to the store to swap it out for one without iOS4. Thankfully its still under warranty.

  • RedDragon

I have been having the battery drain and excessive heat issues… the drain is so bad that if I have it plugged in and am using it, the drain is greater than the charge, absolutely brutal!

  • owais

Mike: Thats what they did for me too. And my warranty was up by 28 days at the time. The replacement phone came with iOS 3.1.3 and was brand new but i got 90 day warranty with it. All they checked for was that there was no liquid damage or other physical damage and swapped it within 20 minutes in store.

It was perfect timing for me since i sold it on kijiji for $300 — just in time for my HUP from Rogers to iPhone 4. :-D

FYI: My wife had started working irratically and battery kept draining and was in general very slow.

  • mackman6151

lately USB connection is iffy too. i hope hte overheating didnt screw up the connections….if i just touch at the bottom it disconnets.

Mine was worse than the one in this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdk2cJpSXLg

I followed the instructions here and it made a huge difference: http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2010/07/07/how-to-speed-up-your-iphone-3g-running-ios4/

    Basically:

    1. Turn off all Spotlight on the iPhone! Settings>General>Home Button>Spotlight

    2. Do a *hard* reset. Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for 10 seconds. Note! It will start to reboot after about 5-6 seconds (Black screen, spinning wheel), *keep holding* for a few seconds more. The iPhone will shut down completely. When you turn it back on, it will take 3-5 minutes to boot cleanly.

I did the above and my 3G is usable again (at least until tomorrow). It’s not where it was with 3.1.3, but it’s no longer a brick. I expect I’ll have to do the hard reboot every week, but at least now I can in good conscience sell this device when I get my iPhone 4.

I think Rogers had already published the prices for Iphone 4

If you activated or renewed your Rogers service agreement on or after June 7, 2010, you are eligible to purchase the 16GB iPhone 4 at $649 or the 32GB iPhone 4 at $749.

  • TJ

Hey, ex, I was wondering are there still reception issues on the iPhone 4 and if there still is does any case solve the problem or it just the bumper

  • asdmd

We won't officially know till tomorrow, but im sure that will be the leading post 'Antenna Issues', lol!

  • smlg.ca

I've definitely noticed a massive performance drop on my 3G post-iOS4.

  • Timespring

Yeah, my wife is also working irratically, and she keeps on draining me… But it usually isn't slow…

I think you had a slip of the tongue there owais ;)

But I also have problems with my 3G… Shows full battery for a long time, then all of a sudden: shutdown….

  • Harrison

Is the warrenty worth getting? Thoughts?

  • http://twitter.com/SPAzZDoGG Kirk Armstrong

lol mine is the same way!! it is absolute crap, I feel like throwing it into a wall, that is why I sooo can't wait until tomorrow, then I will never use this shitty 3g anymore!
Even if the 4.1 update fixes it I won't even have multi-taskign anymore…which by the way is making my phone even worse lol… jailbreak FAIL!!…. >_<

yes I know I can un-do the jailbreak but that's no fun lol.

  • JonnyDub

I believe any case helps with the antenna issues, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see how the reception is in Canada.

  • JonnyDub

Yup, same here. Battery sucks, terrible response sometimes, and the speed is so bad. I'd been contemplating jail-breaking to go back to 3.1.3 (or is there a way to do that without jail-breaking?) but now I think I'll wait to see what Apple can do with an update.

  • Rustybarnacle

Which Jailbreak are you using? The one beta I tried what an utter fail but the current redsn0w beta is working fine, mostly. Still the odd lag but not nearly as bad, not even daily.

  • JonnyDub

Actually mine is kinda like that too, although it started before I got iOS4. Maybe I should just go back to 3.0, lol.

  • Sporadik Styles

It almost appears as if they didn't even test iOS 4 on the 3G. Every webpage takes like 45 seconds of freezing the whole phone etc. I think my 3G now runs as poorly and as the terrible iTunes software used to update the phone. I can wait until my iPhone 4 arrives, I'm sure it will feel like a snappy supercomputer compaired to my almost unusable 3G

  • james

mine is basically a brick. I don't even bother trying to do anything except receive phone calls. Horrible that we aren't allowed to get old versions back up, they can change the base band and patch the holes all they want, just do it for the older version also. Compensation apple, hurry up. At least the yanks had a viable upgrade ready when you decided to Brick the 3G. What about us.

  • http://twitter.com/SPAzZDoGG Kirk Armstrong

well it's ultimately numerous problems tho. The battery is going on my phone, so along with the slowdown, draining issues of ios4 and a bad battery I don't even think it's the jailbreak. I am however using redsnow, the one that fixed the ibook issue.

  • Hyperextension

3G running iOS4 is brutally slow. My wife has one and I upgraded her and it was terrible. I ended up downgrading to 3.1.3 and all is good now. Thank God for the i4 coming tomorrow.

  • owais

Timespring: That sure was a slip of tongue there my friend. I guess going to bed past 1am and getting up at 7am to check on iphone updates here is draining my battery as well. ;-)

But I have to admit, I spend more time with my iphone than my wife so technically i am married to mine…. except that I could sell mine off for $ 300 on kijiji and with your spouse you cant even trade them in for a newer model!

Takecare guys and goodluck! Cant wait till tomorrow!

  • William

Oh good, so my 3G wasn't the only one going berserks after 4.0. The battery drains, overheating are all symptoms mine has encountered. But has anyone encountered your phone basically freezing up during an incoming call? The phone freezes up on me while a call is coming, and I can't help but mercilessly look at my phone vibrating until the person at the other end hangs up. Frustrating. ><

  • runkpocker

I had IOS4 on my 3G for 3 days before figuring out how to downgrade back to 3.1. Performance on IOS4 is horrible.

  • Prodigy

Too late, could not afford to have a useless phone for months. Already backgradded to 3.1.3 and will not be updating again until the masses declare the problem is fixed. I would recomend everyone do the same, but make sure you sync your contact info with something first because it will all be lost.

  • Dan C

Probably an apply ploy to force 3G users to upgrade to iPhone 4. Heck I noticed a performance drop on my 3GS. MY F'N 3GS which stands for 3G speed! Fuck apple.

Btw I'm buying the iphone 4 so they got me!

  • Baddowman

Nice that apple isn't going to have a fix for the 3G phones unitl the 4 is out. But then againg I would still be getting a 4 anyways.

  • Jordan

I was experiencing the same problem. What I did was manually sync your contacts, photos, calenders, etc etc. Then, restore the phone. When you set it up from the iTunes menu, select “set up as new phone” and DO NOT “restore from previous backup”. Then sync everything to your phone again and it works like new. Actually runs a hell of a lot faster than it did during 3.1.3. It's sped up so much I've been contemplating whether I even need new phone. Good luck!

  • Annoyed

My 3G has been dropping the network connection CONSTANTLY since 4.0 and 4.0.1, did it once while I typed this comment! Anyone else seeing this?

  • Tom

As a 3G user, I have had many problems using iOS4. Random crashing, maps taking forever, battery indicator at full and phone shuts down with dead battery… list goes on. Called apple support and they took me through a complete restore – it worked faster then but has since become annoyingly slow and unstable again.

  • Tom

Now that you mention it, my wifi has a tough time connecting in spots (at home) where there were no prior issues. Did you mean wifi or cell network?

  • owais

Tom: I got the same issue with my iphone 3G 8Gb. My warranty had ended just days before i upgraded so i called apple anyway and they gave me a replacement phone (scratchless mint condition) with iOS 3.1.3 on it with an additional 3 month warranty free.

Since im upgrading to the iPhone 4 I decided to sell this replacement phone for good cash which goes to fund my new iPhone 4 from rogers on the HUP.

  • owais

Jordon: i did all than on my iPhone 3G 8Gb but it didnt fix anything. the battery started to last a little longer but i still needed to charge it multi times in a day and the wifi would not work most times. apple gave me a relacement phone with iOS 3.1.3. my phone's warranty had expired by 28 days at the time.

  • owais

Tom: Call them again and tell them the issue. Make sure you tell them that you already tried the restore to factory settings and reduced the brighness to conserve battery and that the wifi doesnt work either. they should give you a replacement phone — even if the warranty is out.

    goodluck!

  • Carm

Mine has definitely done that. It's a bit embarrassing to have to call the person back and have to explain, “My phone wouldn't let me answer it.”

  • Annoyed

Cellular network, it's dropping my connections like crazy ever since 4.0 (and 4.0.1) – just about every time I use it the connection drops at least once

  • Turtle

i'm pretty hopeful that even if it isn't resolved in canada, it will not be as drastic as in america with at&t's disgusting service

  • Drinkinnfightin

y'all know you can downgrade to 3.1.3 if you're having problems? I've downgraded 5 for people, 3G phones. Takes about 15 minutes. No need to jailbreak it. Just google for more info.

  • Tom

This is a 16 GB version, but I'll give it a try!

  • mackman6151

the iphone 3G also has 3G speeds, and thats data speeds not system speed and RAM….sluggishnes is in the system itself not data speeds…..

  • Mike Thomas

For those of you who downgraded, what instructions did you follow? Also, if I restore to factory settings, won't that just clear everything off the phone but still leave it with iOS4?

  • http://twitter.com/sheerluckholmes Sheerluck Holmes

    Settings-general-spotlight search results
Keep only Mail, contacts, calendar, music checked
Do a hard reset (keep Home and top button pushed until turn off – don't use slider)
    Voilà! 3G functionality
    Thank me later :)

  • Kevinkris

A BIG FUCK to apple that i cannot downgrade my OS from iOS 4 to 3.1…

  • budi dermawan

how can I get it for free ???? heeehe
