Apple Officially Announces July 30 iPhone 4 Launch Date

Earlier this morning, Apple issued a press release officially announcing the release of the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries for this Friday, July 30th.

Everyone who watched the July 16 Apple press conference and has been following our reports shouldn’t be surprised by this date, but it is nice to see an official statement.

CUPERTINO, California—July 26, 2010—Apple’s iPhone® 4 will be available in 17 more countries this Friday, July 30. iPhone 4 features FaceTime®, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, Apple’s new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video, and a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Beginning this Friday, customers can purchase iPhone 4 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. iPhone 4 will be available for purchase through Apple’s retail and online stores and Apple® Authorized Resellers.

Pricing & Availability
iPhone 4 will be available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland this Friday, July 30.

iPhone 4 is currently available in France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model. iPhone 4 will roll out to many more countries later this year and Apple will announce availability and local pricing for these additional countries at a later date.

Oddly enough, the Apple Canada Online store still lists the iPhone 4 as “Coming soon” and the press release, while mentioning US pricing, neglected to announce Canadian pricing.

We anticipate more details to be released this week, as the Canadian wireless carriers have started to launch their hardware upgrade/renewal programs for a July 30, 2010 launch.

I'm planning to buy an unlocked one on friday but I'm too old and grumpy to get in a line at 6am. What do you reckon the chances that I go there around 10am to pick one up? My other plan was to buy online and hope we can do an in-store pick-up.

Apple Stores will have enough for launch weekend.

  • IPhone4Ready

    No problem.

  • Microsoft_tech_support

Fido store, Apple store, Best Buy store ?

  • Guest

    Ex,

I am from Newfoundland and we don't have an Apple store. Do you know if the Bell kiosks/stores will have a decent supply of iPhone 4's?

    Thanks

  • http://www.gamerant.com/ alex_sebenski

I've seen it done in a fido store.

  • Vartanarsen

I already called Security, and they said they dont know…depends on what Apple does, is what they said to me.

  • Boobs'n'Guns

I guess we will have to drive around the mall to find the right entrance…Il see you there.

  • Salaman

Just called the Apple Store. They said it would be wise to wait near the Old Navy entrance because it is the closest, but they have no clue on when anything will open. They told me to call back Tuesday or Wednesday for more information.

Im in edmonton and on Fido. I have 1.5 years left in my 3G contract. Should i camp at a fido store or one of the Apple Stores?

  • Jarndt08

I'm in Edmonton as well, and as previously stated I know that Telus stores will only have approx. 15 Handsets each (the same for all carriers I'm assuming) whereas everyone is saying that Apple stores will have enough for the whole weekend. If you get to Fido and there is no one there, then stay there. If not head over to apple.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Probably 10 each for the whole weekend.

  • VancouverBlade

Thanks. So the rumours about stores only have a few are BS?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Oh no, those rumors are true. Rogers stores, Future Shop, etc, they are all
getting about 20 each. Maybe less.

  • fidoiphoneguy

but i'm pretty sure that Apple, you can't use Fido dollars or maybe even renew your contract there? new customers only?

  • Tarek

So I am getting information from other similar sites saying that the phones are locked once they become activated via itunes on an IMEI that belongs to a particular carrier. So the locking occurs when I walk into Rogers (for example) and buy a phone (subsidized or full price) then have them activate it for me on one of their IMEI micro SIMS. Thought?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    You can do both.

  • fidoiphoneguy

thoughts: do you think you'll be able to renew your contract at an Apple store? Fido or Rogers? I have a feeling you could only do this at the roger/fido stores? Apple probably can't access your records like Rogers or Fido can.. new customers only? Thoughts?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

iPhones purchased at any carrier store are locked no matter what. Even
before they are on, they are already locked.

Purchasing full price from Apple, they are unlocked.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Wrong again.

Apple has full access to all of the carriers in Canada.

  • http://twitter.com/BryceMeiklejohn BryceMeiklejohn

Ill probably just head to Apple. The experience will probably be cooler with the big line.

  • 4daysss

so im going to the apple store inside square one. ur saying mall will open at 7 am??? which entrance r u going?

  • Tarek

I don't know Ex with other phones the manufacturer install carrier branded software that involves locking the device to that carrier. So I can see that happening with most phones but iPhones are shipped straight from the Apple Warehouse all with the same software no variation to accommodate the different carriers not to mention Apple doesn't allow any carrier to tamper with their software or devices. I am actually fairly certain that it would be a logistical and software design nightmare to build the phones so that they lock before activated. Makes far more sense to lock it during activation through IMEI's tied to specific carriers.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

The iPhones are locked at carrier stores.

  • Jarndt08

Good luck to you, the way i look at it, the experience will be cooler when I have my shiny new iPhone haha

  • Guest

That sucks. Thanks for your reply though.

  • YYC

OK, I apologize if this is a stupid question but since there seem to many of the same questions that are answered over and over again, I guess I have nothing to lose.

I am hoping to do a hardware upgrade from Rogers once they publish the official policy. Is it possible to do an upgrade at an Apple store, or would I have to do it directly through Rogers?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Yup, you can head to an Apple Store and they can do the whole thing right in
front of you using Rogers access!

  • Tarek

Interesting, We will have to wait and see maybe more information will be available over the coming days. I don't find it hard to believe that carriers will individually lock each version of the phone they get by some sort of system once they have it in stock. But to receive it locked from Apple that's just beyond reason.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Don't take my word for it.

I empower you to go to Rogers, buy one on contract, find out for yourself
and then just return it right away.

  • DAGOODZ

If you sign in to my rogers, in the hardware tab there is an option to click and upgrade to iphone. I pressed it and nothing is happening so i am thinking they are getting geared up!!

  • Luongo

    Hey ex,

I want to renew my contract on rogers and get an iphone 32 Gb for 299. Can i pay 300 cash or will I need my own credit card?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

The renewal is sent to your invoice to pay. Choose however you want to pay
    that 30 days later.

  • Luongo

    Hey ex,

we need more people like you in the world. pass on ur genetics okay? thanks, ur such a help

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

I'm currently training “Gary” the majority of my knowledge, but he's such a
    donkey sometimes and doesn't listen.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca Gary

Bobby Lu, if you need me to hook you up with Ex's Facebook, I can arrange it. You guys can be BFF's! ;)

  • Ralph

I am pretty sure it is carrier lock if you are buying it under a contract. The main reason is if you look at the box of previous version of the iPhone, it has the carrier's name on it. I bought a white iPhone 3GS from a friend and he bought it from fido. On the side of the box it does say fido something something. So I believe coming from the warehouse it is already carrier lock, so I think on launch if you are buying it under a contract it will be lock for sure.

  • Simon

    Hello Ex,

Do you know what time the Apple Store in the Eaton Center (Downtown Toronto) will open on July 30th?

    Thank you!

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Should be 8 am

  • Simon

    Thanks again!

  • MEIGHAN

Question…do I have any hope of getting one at the Bell store near my house (where there are like 4 other Bell options in the same mall in various kiosks etc.)…or do I have to brave the hordes at the local Apple store (Eaton Centre)? If I do have a shot at the Bell store, any ideas on when to go (the mall opens at 10 am, and they have told me they are not opening early)? I've never experienced an iPhone launch before : ) thx!

  • Mat

Hey guys I'm not really sure which model to go with the 16 gb or the 32 gb, i have the 32 gb iPod touch 3rd gen and I have used 7 gigs of space on it so I feel like its almost a waste for me to get the 32. On the other hand I do plan on taking many HD videos on the phone and was wondering if those videos hog alot of space? Do you think I will be safe with the 16 or should I go with the 32?

  • Magrat22

This ad is fake..why would Rogers use the wrong type of iPhone and it's on the O2-UK network!! Seriously this looks like some trolls idea of a joke.

  • Magrat22

Oops sorry I meant my previous post to be for the Rogers HUP annoncement…too many windows open..sorry!!

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca Gary

It's not–it's from a Rogers training PDF document I did not completely post
to protect the anonymity of the source. Any Rogers employee will verify.

  • Richard

    Hello, EX,

Do you know how many iPhone 4's Rogers, bell or other carriers have?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Most stores will get upwards of 15-20 devices for this weekend.

  • WZL

Does anyone know where the shortest line-ups may be in the GTA on Friday/Saturday?

  • Calliope

I just can't bring myself to book the morning off work for a phone (or getting up at like 3 AM for that matter) as much as I want it. Luckily I work in a mall with an Apple Store. Here's hoping that Ex is right about them having enough stock for the weekend, I don't mind lining up after my shift.

  • Guest

    hey fanboys,
I hope u guys really enjoy ur $600+ broken iPhone's.
