Apple Unveils macOS 27 Golden Gate With New AI Siri

Apple today previewed its next major Mac operating system upgrade, macOS 27 Golden Gate, introducing an entirely separate Siri app and a refreshed visual style called Liquid Glass. Yeah, the rumours about Big Bear turned out to be totally false.

The update heavily focuses on expanded artificial intelligence features and interface refinements across the platform.

Siri AI Gets a Dedicated Mac App

The standard voice assistant receives a significant overhaul under the name Siri AI. Powered by next-generation Apple Intelligence, the assistant can now handle open-ended research questions, follow back-and-forth conversational context, and surface specific content buried deep within emails, photos, or notes.

A new dedicated Siri app lets users track their active conversation history on the Mac and seamlessly pick up where they left off on an iPhone.

Apple is also introducing Visual Intelligence to the Mac. Users can take a screenshot of anything on their display, such as a PDF or an image, and ask Siri AI to analyze it, perform an image search, or extract specific data. System-wide writing tools will also allow Siri AI to draft text from scratch or adjust tone and punctuation directly inside apps like Mail and Messages.

Liquid Glass Design and Interface Changes

The user interface receives a visual update for Liquid Glass, which improves screen contrast and text readability. A new customization slider allows users to adjust the intensity of the effect from ultra-clear to fully tinted. The operating system also introduces uniform toolbars, edge-to-edge sidebars, and redesigned menu bar icons.

Core applications receive several feature upgrades as well:

  • Safari: The browser now automatically groups open tabs into distinct topics and includes a Notify Me feature that monitors specific web pages for stock updates or price changes.
  • Mail: A redesigned ranking system surfaces highly relevant search results first, while a new Call Context feature can pull confirmation codes from the inbox when calling businesses like airlines.
  • Photos: New editing tools include Spatial Reframing to adjust shots after they are taken, an Extend tool to expand backgrounds, and a stronger Clean Up tool to remove unwanted elements.
  • Passwords: The standalone Passwords app can now automatically update weak or compromised login credentials on behalf of the user.

Expanded Parental Controls and Device Support

For families, macOS 27 adds an Ask to Browse feature that requires children to request permission in Messages before opening new websites. Communication Safety tools have also been expanded to detect and blur images containing violence or gore, alongside existing nudity protections.

The operating system will be compatible with the newly announced MacBook Neo, as well as Apple silicon-powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and iMac models from 2020 and later. Intel-based Macs are not on the support list.

Apple states that macOS 27 Golden Gate will launch as a free software update this fall, while the new Siri AI features will arrive in beta in English later this year.
