Rogers 6GB/$30 Data Plan Coming Back From the Dead?

Yesterday on Twitter, cellphone guru Michael Kwan sent me an interesting tweet. It was an article from BGR with a juicy rumor that Rogers is going to revive the 6GB/$30 data plan (that some would say we helped advocate for with all the media attention) when HTC Android phones are released on June 2nd.

If this is your first time hearing about the 6GB/$30 data plan, you should know that it is one of the best bangs for your buck out there. Currently, it costs $25 for 500MB, whereas the 6GB/$30 plan works out to $5 for 1GB! The only downside is that it required a 3 year contract to get the plan.

Why the 6GB/$30 Data Plan is Crucial for iPhone Users

The iPhone uses a lot of data to render web pages to look the way they are supposed to. With streaming video/radio (think SlingPlayer over 3G, Corus Radio), Skype calls over 3G, and other data-hungry apps via the App Store, one can easily go over their allotted data usage in one month.

With fresh rumors out there regarding the next iPhone, and the upcoming surprises we have yet to hear about in iPhone OS 3.0 (think video recording), having a sufficient data plan is critical to avoid any extra overage charges from Rogers.

Given that the 6GB/$30 data plan was only available for a limited time (then quietly extended) for iPhone users, I would welcome Rogers bringing back this plan for the late iPhone 3G adopters out there. It’s only fair that all iPhone users can rest easy that they won’t be exceeding their data plan limits.

Would You Jump on the 6GB/$30 Data Plan?

I used 523MB of data last month, and the month before that just over 800MB. What was your data usage?

Are you on the 6GB/$30 data plan? If you aren’t on the plan, would you consider signing up if Rogers does bring it back for Android phones and more?

If it does become available, it will be offered to everyone, even new customers.

Yeah, that $25 value pack with 500MB and caller ID/VVM/SMS was a great deal! I was very close to jumping on that to lower my monthly bill, but in the end I decided to stick it out and keep the limited time 6GB plan. Nice to see you’re working from home, lucky! ;)

3 year terms are fine as long as you get what you want. I just think many people have animosity towards Rogers due to negative customer service/product experiences. Would be curious to know if new cell competitors will actually even dent Rogers/Telus/Bell. Most likely they’ll be bought out a couple years later!

I’ve had mine for a month, I got the basic iPhone plan and was surprised i got 1 gig limit a month instead of the advertised 500 Megabytes plan.
First week, i was sorta worried because I’m a heavy data user on my cable internet. The first month is now over and i’ve only managed to use up 250 Megabytes.
I don’t bother to turn on the Wifi anymore.
I’ll try to get as close as i can to the 1 gig for this month.

6GB for $30 on a 3 year plan is still a MEGA ripoff. In the US, for $15 a month you get unlimited. T

If all you do is check email and browse web pages, then 1GB a month is more then enough. That all changes though if you view streaming video’s daily or download movies. You can easily eat up that measly 6GB in a couple of weeks.

Tired of being ripped off by Rogers, Fido and the likes, I will only get an iphone if they offer the 6GB plan again. Maybe I’ll take a look at the android, just in case, as I hate this mafia (rogers-apple).

My friend told me about a phone, the Nokia N96, it is a top class phone, really cool. So I called rogers to ask if they have this phone and they said yes, they gave me a price and everything. They made me sign a contract for three years with a new plan. They told me that I would have my phone through mail in a couple of days. When i finally got my phone it was a wrong phone, they gave me a Nokia 6086 some peice of shit!!!! But thats not the problem, the problem is that This mafia company does not even have this Nokia N96 phone, They just wanted me to renew my 3 year contract on my old phone. Now I’m stuck with anouther 3 years of this mafia company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! f**k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats why you never order a phone on the phone. go there in person and deal with them while you can see all the detail infront of you and make them print a copy for you before anything? they fucked up my bills so many times its just crazy they do whatever they want to people and people can’t do nothing much about it really, we have no protection from the government either so you should watch for yourself.
