Rogers 6GB/$30 Data Plan Coming Back From the Dead?

Yesterday on Twitter, cellphone guru Michael Kwan sent me an interesting tweet. It was an article from BGR with a juicy rumor that Rogers is going to revive the 6GB/$30 data plan (that some would say we helped advocate for with all the media attention) when HTC Android phones are released on June 2nd.

If this is your first time hearing about the 6GB/$30 data plan, you should know that it is one of the best bangs for your buck out there. Currently, it costs $25 for 500MB, whereas the 6GB/$30 plan works out to $5 for 1GB! The only downside is that it required a 3 year contract to get the plan.

Why the 6GB/$30 Data Plan is Crucial for iPhone Users

The iPhone uses a lot of data to render web pages to look the way they are supposed to. With streaming video/radio (think SlingPlayer over 3G, Corus Radio), Skype calls over 3G, and other data-hungry apps via the App Store, one can easily go over their allotted data usage in one month.

With fresh rumors out there regarding the next iPhone, and the upcoming surprises we have yet to hear about in iPhone OS 3.0 (think video recording), having a sufficient data plan is critical to avoid any extra overage charges from Rogers.

Given that the 6GB/$30 data plan was only available for a limited time (then quietly extended) for iPhone users, I would welcome Rogers bringing back this plan for the late iPhone 3G adopters out there. It’s only fair that all iPhone users can rest easy that they won’t be exceeding their data plan limits.

I used 523MB of data last month, and the month before that just over 800MB. What was your data usage?

Are you on the 6GB/$30 data plan? If you aren’t on the plan, would you consider signing up if Rogers does bring it back for Android phones and more?

I’ve used about 4 gigs so far this month (5 days left in my cycle), but I tether for all my lap top based internet so its not from iphone surfing for the most part. In any regard, it makes me feel like I’m actually getting my money’s worth from fido.

I hate plans.
But really, when I thought about it, where the he’ll are you gonna go? Bell? Uh no, telus? Or god that’s the worse service in Canada. So, looks like Rogers is the only realy choice anyway… So sign me up!

I’ve got the 6 GB plan and have never come close to using it all. But I’m glad I have it now, and data usage will probably only go up in the future. But I have a few questions:

Is the 6 GB plan tied to the 3G and EDGE networks? Or do you think it will apply to the upcoming 4G network?

And all you guys tethering and using Skype over 3G – any grief from Rogers/Fido over this? Is the plan for 6 GB of data – any old data you can throw at it? Has anyone had any trouble using Skype over 3G?

Images may be fake.The system used there in the pictures is called “MMS”, an old retail system no longer in use by Rogers stores.

The problem here is in that system, first, you can generate your own entries. So thats the first red flag.
The second issue is with “MMS”, if you scan a UPC code (from the product) as seen above, a SKU is automatically generated. However I see no SKU.

I don’t think I’ll get it given the second chance around this time. I still would prefer if Roger/Fido can give me like ten bucks for 250Meg ish since I’m not a heavy user and that I don’t need to lock into a 3 years contract.

I already have the 6GB/$30 plan with both the family iPhones, and use anywhere between 50MB and 600MB depending on what’s happening in the month.

I find that it is all about peace of mind. IF I need to use data, I’m not worried that it is going to end up with a massive bill at the end of the month. For me, it means I can get directions while walking to a store, check out the price of that cool gadget at other stores before I buy where I currently am, or do various other data hungry things without concerns. That’s worth $30 to me. No doubt.

For those who can get by with wireless access points, or without data… I’m impressed with your willpower. I just can’t help myself. Data is a cool feature of the phone, and I’m hooked. Mostly, my use is rising… (at some point, my battery will begin to limit me, I suppose… but then, I’ll just have to get one of those battery pack addons this site has reviewed).

So far, I do not have any problems using iPhone without data plans..

There are wifi spots everywhere.. starbucks… UBC… Waves’….

Depending on the price of the upcoming plan, I might try the data plans…

Same here, no data plan with my iPhone for about 2 years now lol
I always can find a WIFI spot and if not, well I guess I need to wait till I can
If there was no 3 year contract, I would maybe think twice about it…

Haha yea i picked it up and the most ive used is around 1gig in a month but i average about 500MB/month sometimes going over..id rather just pay the extra 5$ than have to worry about going over … ever..

I worried a lot about the data package when I first got my iPhone because the 6GB plan had gone by then (even the extension had gone – I got my phone late). Ended up going for the Smartphone package with 500mb data and was surprised to realize I barely use any of it!

I work from home (working in pajamas FTW! and crawling out of bed 10mins before I start work even more win!) so the iPhone uses WiFi most of the time. Even when I’m out I tend to use it without worrying about data usage and still never go much past 20-30MB a month.

I’m probably not your average iPhone user tho.

i use about 2gb per month. Recently sold my iphone and using my n95. Waiting for new iphone . Tethering, downloading torrents, podcasts, web, apps, etc. Very useful. Think of it, when data goes 4g, 30-60mb/sec who will need home based internet?

I’ll be honest. I have tried to use a lot of data just to see and I dont think I have ever used even a gig yet. Well I use the wifi a lot too. 6 gig plan rocks though!

I’m with Mirth on this one. I have never reach a gig of usage yet but I love the peace of mind I have knowing I will never go over. I love using my iPhone for everything. It’s great for those quirky facts you that just pick @ your brain and you just have to find now. Not when you can find a wifi connection but now. And for those that complain about a 3yr term, ask yourself when do you plan on not having a cell phone. We will be paying some company our money to use there network for as long as we have mobile phones. So why the big deal in locking into one for a 3yr term.

Yeah, that $25 value pack with 500MB and caller ID/VVM/SMS was a great deal! I was very close to jumping on that to lower my monthly bill, but in the end I decided to stick it out and keep the limited time 6GB plan. Nice to see you’re working from home, lucky!
