Telus Officially Launches iPhone Visual Voicemail

Effective April 12 2010, all new Telus customers that activate an iPhone on the Telus iPhone price plans will now receive Visual Voicemail for free as part of their price plan.

The following iPhone plans are eligible:

  • Clear Choice Smartphone $50
  • Clear Choice Smartphone $65
  • Clear Choice Smartphone $80
  • Clear Choice Smartphone $100

Prior to today, Telus customers did not have Visual Voicemail working and the feature was expected to become fully functional in Spring 2010. The current Telus iPhone plans offer customers free “Voicemail 3” service, however that will now become Visual Voicemail.

Existing Telus iPhone plan customers will also be receiving Visual Voicemail for free. Effective April 22 2010, existing iPhone customers will be notified by text message or email regarding the switch from their current voicemail to Visual Voicemail.

Okay… trying not to get too excited here… is this the real Apple-style Visual Voicemail, or the Telus version?

Telus website still has nothing about the Visual Voicemail. You would think they would push this, especially for business users

Not according to the Telus rep I just got off the phone with. I got my email about 'free visual voicemail will be available on your phone within 24 hours' over 24 hours ago; when I phoned Telus to ask why my Voicemail was still the “please enter your password” phone-up version, she said she would activate it for me, then asked for an email address I would like the messages sent to. She had never heard of Apple-style Visual Voicemail. Sigh.

Really? How long after your email did it start?

Huh, this morning I'm eating my words… or rather, the woman I spoke to at Telus is eating hers… Apple-style Visual Voicemail kicked in for me this morning, about 36 hours after an email promised me it would be activated within 24. So apparently, the customer support folks at Telus aren't up to speed on what's happening yet, but as a result, you might be able to get free Voicemail-To-Text if you phone up and ask? (She had me all set up for it, until I realised what service she was talking about, and I asked her to disable it again..)

I've got it working on my phone – more than 24 hours after that email saying it would be up and running in 24 hours, mind you. It seems that I'll miss a call, and then the voicemail for said call doesn't show up until several hours (and sometimes an entire day!) later. AND, when I delete a message, it'll show up the next day as a new message again. Anyone else having this happen?
