iPhoneTheSolution: StealthSIM Review/Contest!

by Gary on January 15th, 2008

This is the post that will matter to those still locked on a 1.1.2 iPhone. As I told you before, iPhoneTheSolution sent me a StealthSIM to review. And as I mentioned, after I post about the review I was going to give away the StealthSIM in a contest. That’s right baby, a free StealthSIM, worth $125US to Canadians looking for an unlock solution for their 1.1.2 iPhones! PLUS…I am also going to include a brand new Rogers SIM card into the mix! So that makes this contest worth about $150US in prizes! More details after the review!

The StealthSIM Chip

The StealthSIM is just one of the “dummy SIM” solutions out there that will unlock your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone. You have a lot of options out there, but reliability can be an issue with the proliferation of knock off TurboSIM’s and other SIM solutions. The StealthSIM has worked for many people out there. Now’s let’s put it to the test and see if it works as advertised. The chip itself is almost paper thin, and from the looks of it, cost about $1 to make! But, this is what you need to unlock your 1.1.2 iPhone!

Unlocking an OTB 1.1.2 iPhone

The test subject we have here is my friend’s jailbreaked 1.1.2 iPhone that he’s had for a while now (or should I say expensive iPod Touch, LOL!). Anyways…I checked out the video and the document on how to install the StealthSIM. It’s fairly simple. You will need a paperclip and a cutting utensil, preferably a cutting tool. Here’s the StealthSIM side by side with my Fido SIM:

img_2300-small.JPG

Your SIM needs to have the corner cut out to accommodate for the tiny chip that protrudes out of the StealthSIM. Check out my picture-perfect cut here:

img_2301-small.JPG

I’ve read stories on forums about how users had their StealthSIMs lost in their iPhones upon trying to take out their SIM tray. The reason that happened to them was because there was no tape holding down the SteathSIM to the tray. To avoid this, I cut a few tiny pieces of clear tape to secure the SealthSIM–but you have to make sure the tape is thin, as the try does not leave much room for the tape to go down.

So Does the StealthSIM Work?

I had an old Fido Pay As You Go SIM that I tried with this review. I modified the SIM, put the StealthSIM on, taped it down a bit, then had to jimmy it into the iPhone SIM tray. After a momentary pause, I got a message asking if I wanted to have the “StealthSIM” message displayed or not. I chose “yes” and this is what I saw. Eureka! 1.1.2 iPhone unlocked in Canada!!

So there you have it. The StealthSIM, courtesy of iPhoneTheSolution was mailed to me within two days via Xpresspost and it works as advertised. If you don’t want to wait any longer, it’s an easy and instant solution to unlock your 1.1.2 iPhone.

StealthSIM & Rogers SIM Card Giveaway/Contest! Finally!

As promised, I am going to give this StealthSIM away to one of my lucky readers! I’m also going to throw in a brand new Rogers SIM card. This will make the perfect bundle for someone looking to buy an iPhone and unlock it. $150US in value, coming your way for free! Here’s how to enter:

Does the stealthSIM work with an iTunes-upgraded first-gen iPhone? It would be cool to have access to iPhone 2.0 while we wait for the jailbreak/unlock.
  • Ben
    Two things:
I live in Saskatoon, Sk and I bought a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone with boot-loader 4.6 on ebay then ordered an X-SIM from some guy in Montreal. I jail-breaked the iPhone then threw the X-SIM in with a rogers sim. works like a charm. I just upgraded the firmware to 1.1.3. X-SIM still works! i have heard there has been problems with StealthSIM when upgrading the iPhone firmware, at least I'll never experience it haha GO X-SIM!

Also, I heard that Telus is thinking of moving to GSM from CDMA... so that will increase the possibilities of iphones in Canada. and there still is that 700 MHz auction coming up for new wireless providers. Finally, There'll be hope for our poor nation!
  • Jimmy
Can the iPhone work on a service provider such as Telus?
  • Keswick Jimmy
I too ....I'm waiting to take the iphone in Canada plunge.

Question.. What features do not work on a unlocked iphone with Rogers. Worse yet I live in Keswick, Ontario.

Would love to win the StealthSim.
  • dtkenmo
I recently bought off ebay one of the "knock-off" SIM adapters, which was shipped to me from SinoyHK.com, one of the myriad HK Internet vendors.

Their unit came with a replacement SIM carrier which is designed to hold both the adapter and the SIM firmly in place, obviating the need for taping or gluing or otherwise attaching them together.

They worked well on my week 50 iphone w/ BL 4.6. As I had previously Jailbroke & activated it, all I had to do was install the adapter with my Primus (Rogers network) SIM and it just worked. No problems; everything working as it should: dialing, calling, receiving calls, SMS, WiFi, etc.

I paid considerably more than the website price, but did hit my under-$50 target incl. shipping. Ordering from their site, you get a *much* better price but a little higher s&h charge. Still, dirt cheap, and they accept PayPal. I ordered a few more for friends...

    i hope i win :P

Great review, I'm in the market for an iPhone right now and wanted to go with this solution. It would be really nice if I had a StealthSIM to go with my new phone.

    Jon :)

great site....would like to enter the contest! good luck to all!
  • Samer
Thanks, and better luck next time everybody.
  • Rick
Does anyone know if this work with 1.1.3 OTB phones?
  • Tim
So do we know who won yet??
  • arnold
excellent summary for canadian users. thanks for the info. will look to purchase the StealthSIM for my 1.1.2 OOB.
  • Ryan
Perfect timing for this contest. I bought a bricked iphone hoping to fix it, and after many many hours I just gave up. I just purchased myself a brand spanking new 1.1.2 OTB 8gb iphone, so winning a stealthsim here would be just great! Thanks for setting up the contest and good luck to all!
  • Alan
This is a great short review, though I am already an iphone owner, always good to know just in case!
  • Edsel
Thanks for the great post, and easy to follow pictures... i've had my phone for a few months and im hesitant to upgrade to 1.1.2. Upgrading seems harder than what i have initially done before, plus i dont have a wireless modem at home... stealthsim is far more easier than softlock, but at a price... hope i win and can finally upgrade to 1.1.2..

    good luck everyone...
  • Adam
Hopefully by the time I get to the states, there are still some 1.1.2 phones left!!
  • Eric
    Thanks for the easy tutorial!
  • Mat Dwyer
I hope a stealthsim will come my way, it would make my day! (thats a rhyme haha)
  • Erika
I need one of these!! I don't trust the HW Unlock!!
  • John Owen
Getting an iPhone shortly and need me a StealthSIM so thanks in advance for the nice free one!
  • Ken
Kasakato from RFD checking in! I always refer to iPhone in Canada when I have to unlock iPhones up here for friends! Keep up the good work.

  • Snuffles
I hope I win this contest!!! Thanks iphone Fan for all the useful tips. I enjoy reading your blog.
  • Jaron Stokes
I really need one of these, i hope i win! grea site, keep up the work!!!!
  • It's really annoying that Rogers isn't offering the iPhone "legally" yet... I'd love to get a working iPhone with the 1.1.3 update in Canada! I guess the StealthSim (my only option so far) doesn't work with it yet.

Thanks for the site, it's awesome to have one place to find all the relevant info for Canadians.

    Cheers!
    Ben.
  • Jonathan Lee
WOW.. I as far as I heard the second version was unlockable. This is great news. Question for you, can you update the unlocked second version to the latest Jan 8th software and still have the phone work??. And put my name in the hat too please.
  • Fish
This is actually a great tutorial. I'm hoping it's as simple as it looks. I'll try once my phone arrives :D
  • Chris
Thanks for all the info. I think i am going to opt for the StealthSim as opposed to waiting for Bladox turbosim to recover from the "tsunami" (that no one ever heard about) that hit their factory.
  • Josheesh
    Good luck everybody
  • I am just looking into the ***Sim solutions for the phone as I have had mine for a while, and really want to use it!! Thanks for the write up... I like the thin tape idea so the sim doesn't move. Thanks!!
  • dpare
Your site is very helpful, i only wish that in true canadian fashion their would be a french version ;) I'm only kidding
  • This stealthsim looks awesome. You didn't have to do anything other than put the Fido SIM & StealthSIM in together? ie: nothing on your computer or iPhone?

If not, then I'm definitely going to order one. Unless I win the contest for the free one, of course ;-)
  • 2 days left and everyone is excited ;)
  • Hi Anthony, I saw your blog post, but can you link to www.iphoneincanada.ca with the words "iPhone in Canada" instead? Once that is complete, consider yourself with another entry. :)
  • Done :) Best of luck to me then :D
  • DrPacman
I'm brand new to this forum, and find the information to be very good... keep up the good work
  • William Li
Sounds great, I'm brand new to this forum and hoping to pick up an iPhone in the next little bit.
  • Hobbs6
Love the blog. Hoping to pick an iPhone up quick here. A free stealth card would be very nice indeed to help offset the cost.

We're now a firmware behind the Apple locking team. Lets get on it. If I was smarter I'd help ;)
  • KevinL
DOes anyone no if you can run Thunderbird as your mail program on the iphone. I am just doing some research prior to buying a new iphone. Would be great to win a StealthSim to go along with the purchase. Great site for iphone newbies.
  • Samer
Hi Again, OK here's my Blog entry at http://sam4jc.spaces.live.com/default.aspx

with a link back to iPhoneInCanada..hope that meets the requirements for the contest. Cheers
  • Yes it does! One extra entry will be thrown into the mix. I have a lot of names to draw from!!
  • Derek
My Grandson has a week 50 iphone which we jailbroke and updated to 1.1.2 again. He is currently using it as as an Itouch.
He would love the StealthSim to unlock it and use on Rogers Pay as you go.
  • Ivan
Any word yet if stealth sim is going to be upgraded to work with 1.1.3?
  • Dusty
    @Ivan
I have not heard nothing but talking to a seller from them... he said they are currently looking into it. They wanna make it so u can upgrade ur current StealthSIM. I may be wrong, as iPhone Fan has better contact with them :p but that's some news that may help ya.

    Dusty
  • Tim
I am curious about 1.1.3 as well. I just purchased an iPhone, and think the Stealth SIM would be a great way to unlock it (or a software unlock, which is hopefully just over the horizon!!) But I am wondering if they will charge another $100 for a 1.1.3 version, or make it upgradeable or something!
  • tran
    i'm sure i'll
hope soft unlock come out soon...
  • Chris
Thanks for all the helpful information!
Hope I can win the stealthsim :)
  • andrew
I finally picked up my iphone... now just waiting to be able to get it on Rogers. Thanks for all the useful information on your site!
  • Leigh Durland
I follow you everyday.. was hoping for some good news on tuesday but no avail. If i win the sim i guess i will have no excuse to go out and buy a iphone. Im getting tired of waiting.

    Keep up the good work..
  • Kris Girouard
Hello, where exactly do u put the clear tape to hold the sim???
I do not want to lose my stealthsim inside my pride and joy
  • I cut thin strips, a few millimeters wide and taped the bottom of the sim tray and around the sides at the top. You must ensure that your tape is THIN...because the sim tray slot is very narrow.

One piece rubbed off as I was inserting my sim...just be careful...take your time!
  • hadimirza
Your site has really helped me since i've gotten my iPhone. Very interesting stuff and all. Put my name in the hat, I hope i win this one so i can actually use my iPhone as a phone.
