Quantcast Rogers/Fido Release “My Account” iPhone App | iPhone in Canada Blog - Tips, Tricks, News, and Tutorials for Canadian iPhone Users

That's pretty interesting actually. I'm going to try it out.
  • Majere XYU
What the hell? Why cant' customers access the app without a data plan, on basic Wi-Fi? Way to go and gimp a nice app... I, for one, don't have enough need of an internet connection to pay $30+ each month for what amounts to a few youtube clips worth of bandwidth.
  • I don't know if you have an iPhone, but I've used it without a data plan and... well, might as well buy anything else that's cheaper. Besides, I've just installed the application and as I understand it, it uses the 3G/EGDE connection to authenticate with Rogers/Fido, therefore there is no need to remember any login/password.

Use Mobile Minutes Tracker by Pageonce
  • You have to subscribe to online billing from Rogers to use that app.

The Official Rogers app zero account mods.
  • What a tool
Who the hell gets an iPhone without a data plan?? Seriously ... either spend the $30 bucks or stop posting on site's where 99.9% of people do.
  • KPod
You sir are a donkey rapist. Who gets an iphone with a ridiculously overpriced data plan where wifi is availalbe anywhere.

    What a Tool.
  • U Are Cheap
If you are using an iPhone, why do you go cheap on the plan? Don't tell me WiFi is everywhere because it's a pure lie!
  • Andre
Works just fine on my corporate plan
  • Wow!! I wasn't thinking that Rogers/Fido would ever release an app like that...

Works really fine on my side too...
  • Dan
Maybe Telus will release the same soon, but without the annoying bugs. The Telus site does a great job of keeping me up to date on data, text messages, and minutes (only text messages are really of interest to me, since the iPhone tracks the others)

Majere, you really shouldn't have acquired an iPhone. One of the great things that male the iPhone so great is the use of apps with data, and the capabilities the phone has on the go with Internet capabilities. The iPhone uses a ton of data on a lot of stock apps and downloaded apps, having an iPhone without data is like a 13 year old girl with a blackberry, she has it to look cool. I'm sure your not doing it to look "cool" but please don't be upset with Rogers or fido this time, they gave u an app that you should be able to use with ease, I know the data plans are pricey, if u can't afford one buy a cheap phone and an iPod touch, and I don't wanna hear "oh I want it all in one" cause that's a bogus reason. You can get a mix and match data and voice plan for like $45, get a data plan and I promise you'll use your phone to it's full potential oh and btw I have a data plan and I don't use it to go on YouTube... You should have hoped on the 6gb band wagon when u had the chance!!! Now I'm gonna go use the app to figure out my account info take care!

That's not really a valid point. Take my situation for example, I spend the bulk of my time in two places: Home or at University. Both places have wifi and we all know that as far as speed is concerned wifi > 3G. The rest of my time is usually spent either at friends' places or on the rare occasion, outside. Let me drill it down even further and say that the time that is spent outside, most of it tends to be downtown, where there are a plethora of Starbucks and free open wifi access points. My scenario is quite common and prevalent among students. There simply is no need for a data plan.

Under this assumption, your argument towards having a data plan becomes invalid. Moreover, your statement about the iPhone being useless without a data plan is also false. After all, I am able to store cached routes via the default maps application or if I go the jailbreak route, I can download entire maps and store them on the phone. Seeing as how data is not required for the inbuilt GPS module to work, people manage fine. Especially now that there are a lot of GPS Navigation applications, there is no longer a POI issue either.

Your assumption that people get an iPhone without a data plan to "look cool" is also silly. You are implying that a 3G connection is a critical part of the iPhone functionality, which it is not. Sure, people might miss out on some of the apps, but I urge you to peruse the Appstore and you'll find that most of the apps don't rely on an internet connection, much less a 3G one.

Now to the issue of Rogers choosing to only have the app work over wifi is complete idiocy. Anyone who is a seasoned programmer will tell you that a fallback is really important. All rogers has to do is add an option for people to login using their online account or register a new one. Certainly, this app is saving them a lot of money in wasted man hours, due to people calling them and inquiring about usage, so that simple change is only going to save them more money. The simplest thing would be to allow everyone to use it.

On a final note, I realize that this is the internet and that means that linguistic skills go out the door, but implying that someone is a "13 year old girl" or even mentioning it as a derogatory statement requires that you not type like one.

Mine is not showing my usage. It's says that I made account changes and it will reflect on my next month's bill but I never made any account changes... It shows my balance just fine (which is kind of depressing lol) Anyone else have this? I've been over my minutes for the past 3 months and this could really come in handy.
  • digitalterry
I have a family plan and so the stats are not very useful. It shows how much my phone has used but not how much my wife has used. Therefore, there is no way to really tell if I am close to going over on my minutes.
  • rico
I have a family plan as well. It looks like what you're seeing is the combined usage. If you clicked on the right arrow for the minutes used, it says "Pooled". If you clicked on the right arrow for the data used, it says "Shared".
  • digitalterry
Hmm, then the numbers must be wrong. The usage numbers looked like the amount I might have used but there is no way that both of us have used what it is saying. The numbers are too low for being 2.5 weeks into the monthly cycle.
  • Hi. Family plan usage can only be displayed for that particular phone and not the entire account usage. This was set up for privacy reasons but perhaps in future they may update this feature. I'll be sure to send that suggestion to the team.
  • fanium
What's happen if I only have a US account?
  • It's also missing the ability to view/set MY5 numbers, what plan options you have (I didn't realize picture messaging was not included in my iPhone Value Pack) and the ability to add/remove features.

What I do like is that I don't have to remember my rogers.ca username and password, since I can never seem to login to that crappy website.
  • Hi Jonathan. Great suggestions, I've passed those on to the team. I do believe that MY5 functionality will be added in a future phase. Stay tuned :)
  • Thanks Mary! All-in-all, I'm glad this app exists.
  • Ill give this app a try!
  • rorypiper
I've been wanting something like this. A quick simple way to see me voice, data, and messaging usage. Thanks for the tip!
  • Raffi
You can even pay your bill from the app :)
  • maplebaconcheeseburger
its kinda scary that an iPhone app can tell you your account balance.
  • There's an app for that!
  • Carl
Not really, it's coming from your carrier. They probably just transmit your phone's serial or something, do a record look up with your name and serial and voila!
  • Penfield
NOT WORKING :( anyone else having problems with this app??? mine just keeps saying cannot display information at this time...i have done everything right...turned off wifi and tried enabling both edge and 3G...have data plan...it works when i sign into rogers on my laptop...just not with the app
  • torque3k
that is exactly what is happening to me. Figures..

Is this happening because I have a corporate account? I saw a poster above state that his corporate account works fine with this app..
  • Hi torque3k. Corporate users should not be able to see their balance and usage through this application for privacy reasons. If there is a corporate user who is seeing their usage, I'd have to look into it to troubleshoot as that should not be happening.

The app just sucks...in 20 attempts to use it in a variety of different locations too I was able to see the balance 3 times and my usage ONCE?? The app actually got stuck on retrieving the data and froze the phone entirely and when left long enough caused the phone to get extremely warm! I have to say the Rogers website access for my billing on cable and internet is just terrible and I find its hit or miss using it most of the time too. I was excited to be able to quickly access this type of information on my iPhone, however, as to be expected this app (Fido version) is just as 'reliable' as the crap Rogers website.
Why they rushed this to market when its so obviously flawed is just typical of Rogers generally. I think too that not being able to have a choice as to whether I use data or wifi is also a typical Rogers response and a "Do it the Rogers way only". Obviously too WIFI is significantly faster than 3G speeds for most people so having a WIFI option should've been an automatic thing. Come on Rogers/FIDO!!

I don't have a corp account and I meet all the listed requirements, but the app doesn't work for me! It just says that it's unable to retrieve information at this time... This is also happening to my brother and a friend of mine.. What gives?!
  • Carl
    It works fine for me.
  • Andrew
It doesn't work 100% of the time for me, but it does work eventually... Hopefully it will be improved in that sense. At any rate, it's awesome that Rogers released this, as it's actually something that will help me save money. Unexpected, I guess. It's also cool that it gets the information from your sim card so you don't have to sign in or even make an account.

I remember when I had a concern with my usage when I was with Bell. I called them up and talked to different people for over an hour. Eventually a supervisor told me there was nothing she could do and recommended that I write down (manually in a notepad) how long each of my conversations was to keep track of my usage. Yeah, right...

You can see why I'm glad I've switched from that pathetic excuse for a cellphone provider (Bell)
  • jay
Hmm it doesn't work for me. I wonder if it's because I'm on the blackberry data plan (I switch from BB to iPhone once in awhile).
  • dzakary
Any idea if it works for family plan accounts? My wife and I are on the same account. She has a Blackberry and I have an iPhone.
  • Hi dzakary. Absolutely, this service does work with family plans. However for privacy reasons, we only display usage for that particular phone and not the entire account usage.
  • gregcrick
I just installed it and it seems to be broken for me right now. This is no surprise coming from Rogers as more often than not when I visit their webpage something on it is broken.
  • gdkp
I have the app. I have a data plan. I am on the 3G network. I have electronic billing to my TD account.
It won't work. Always 'unavailable to display your usage details at this time'.

  • The app seems to have stopped working suddenly (surprising?!). It worked the
first time I tried but now it's a one giant FAIL.
  • Flaxx
i'm in the exact same situation. it was working fine, albeit sluggishly, for the first day or so. now it consistently tells me to try again later.
  • macmurray
this app sucks balls, it never works, don't waste your time
  • Hmm, nice idea but it's not performing properly for me. I get my voice usage info but data and messaging are just blank screens. Ah well, it's new and the servers are no doubt getting hammered at the mo'. P'raps it'll improve as things settled down.
  • Yeah, good news, it's settled down now and the data and messaging tabs now display info. I've just used the app to pay my bill for the first time - nice job Rogers!
  • Hendie Dijkman
I have yet to get this to work for me. Doesn't seem to be able to get my account info from Rogers.

... ah! seems like everyone else has the same problem! X1Zero .. any comments?
  • This app worked wonderfully the morning I first downloaded it. I don't think
    it's worked since.
  • yogi
    Same as Gary.
  • Hi All. I've jumped in to try and answer some questions below but I also wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for their feedback. As with most new iPhone apps, there can sometimes be bugs along the way and we are working hard to make continual improvements.

Couple of general points to make, based on feedback and what I've read here:

--Use of the application does *not* require data or use up your data. It works as long as you have a data connection and so the application is free to use. If you currently have a plan without data, you may have received a prompt to sign up for a "day pass" in order to use the application. Don't worry, this is being fixed so you can also be able to use the application for free.

--WiFi is not supported via the application because customers are being authenticated via their SIM card. If you are using WiFi, you can still go to Rogers.com on your iPhone and login.

    I hope that helps :)
    Thanks!

Hi Mary - like many others here my app is not working. I have a Rogers Shared plan with 1GB data. Using iphone every time I activate the app it just tells me changes were made during the billing period (this is true) and my data not available. I do get to see my messaging activity but not data and not voice. Can I expect this to work once this billing cycle is complete? What about all these folks that haven't made any changes and can't see their data? Is Rogers working the bugs out of this? Happy to see an actual Rogers rep on the site. Will be really nice to see this app working. Thanks
  • Hi harrc -- Thanks for asking. This message has to do with the device trying to read prorated information. Once the new billing cycle starts, it should be fine. Hope that helps.
  • Alicia
I just got my iPhone a few days ago and it is on the same account as my dad's iPhone, which he's had for a few months. I want to use this app to keep track of my phone usage, obviously, but when i open the app, it just says that it's unable to provide the information because there were changes made to the account during the current billing cycle. Does this mean that i'll be able to use this app once my first payment is made? It shows the bill information for my dad's iPhone, and the app works fine for his phone.
  • Correct. Give it one full bill cycle then it will work.
