Leaked Pics: Multitasking Gestures Coming to the iPhone?

Update 1: There’s a now a video of gestures, via YouTube user antoninygaard. (via Engadget)

Some more rumours are making the rounds regarding upcoming features for the iPhone. The latest images are from BGR, which indicate some leaked screens that indicate multitasking gestures could be coming our way. There were rumours that the Home button would soon be disappearing. Is there a connection?

According to Endgadget’s sources, the leaked images sent to BGR are indeed real.

We just received an interesting tidbit of information on the above pic (and others that BGR has its hands on). According to sources, after the iPhone 4 barroom debacle, Apple made significant changes to how it keeps track of — and identifies to third parties — its devices. Namely, the company began adding clauses to screens on the phones which read “Confidential and Proprietary, if found, please contact…” followed by a 408 number (that’s Cupertino, of course). This prevents any misunderstanding from parties who may come across these devices. So what does it all mean? Well, not much, save that it seems these photos we’re viewing are in fact the real deal… which means gestures may be headed to your iPhone. Intrigue!

Such gestures would be very interesting indeed on the iPhone. My issue with this feature is that the existing iPhone screen is too small for this to work properly. For people with large hands, just try using 4-5 fingers to pinch out and swipe. It just doesn’t feel right. Try it for yourself.

What do you think? Are gestures coming our way to the iPhone?

  • I like the idea personally. I think the easiest variants of these gestures for different sized hands could be:
    * Switching: Four fingers across the screen to swipe sideways between apps
    * Home: Place the thumb at the bottom, and swipe four (or three) fingers down towards it to constitute a home pinch (instead of thinking along the lines of forming a perfect circle and reducing equally to the center, which is just awkward).

  • (after the video update) The app switching gesture makes sense… I think it was just confusing when rotation lock was on, and perhaps the phone didn’t sense vertical, so the sideways app switch it thought was ‘up’ to show the app bar… and unless I missed it, there was no demo of the home gesture. In the end, for gestures I thought it demonstrated app switching well, and I like the update, personally.

The word from apple is that multi tasking gestures will not be released with iOS 4.3. They are just getting feedback from developers on the gestures for now.

It looks cool to me too, I’m just worried about accidental swipes becoming annoying.

Just installed 4.3 beta 2 on my iPad and Gestures are gone. They were there in 4.3 beta 1. Too bad. It was kind of cool.

Ok that was strange how when it was horizontal the multi-task bar opened right below it and not on the side like it should. Look at the last few seconds to see what I’m talking about. Now that is cool.

4 or 5 finger swiping would be silly. But swipe up to bring up multitasking would be awesome , and would save that little home button from all that Abuse.

  • Gestures option is not in 4.3 beta 2 for the iPhone 4. At last not for me. Didn’t get the chance to install 4.3 beta 1 so I don’t know.
