Will Apple rebrand OS X to “MacOS” to bring it in line with iOS, tvOS and watchOS? We’ve previously seen clues within OS X code referencing the new name, and now evidence has appeared on Apple’s website.
According to a page from Apple’s environmental initiatives detailing product life cycles, the second step noted the following text (which has since been removed), spotted by Ars Technica:
Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.
(umm, wait, my expected Apple Watch life cycle is only supposed to be three years?!)
According to John Gruber from Daring Fireball, his podcast last year with Apple VP Phil Schiller pretty much alludes to “MacOS” coming this summer at WWDC:
Gruber: watchOS, with a lower-case “w”. Are you trying to kill me?
Laughs.
Schiller: [laughs] It’s, um… I think it works really well. I think it’s nice, it’s ownable, it’s special…
I think, you’ll see. Give us time, we’ve been through many fun naming things. This is an easy one. There have been many fun naming things through the years — some very emotional, some very easy — and most of the time, when all’s said and done, you look back years later, people say “Yeah, you guys were right, it all made sense together.” So I think we’re doing the right thing.
We’ll have to wait and see at WWDC—maybe we’ll see a preview of MacOS to go with rumoured thinner MacBooks?
