How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Beta Without a Developer Account

Share:

Warning: the following info is for educational purposes only. Use at your own risk, we are not responsible.

It appears a loophole has been discovered by a clever developer to install iOS 5 beta on your iPhone without a developer account. As per Gizmodo:

Download and Install iOS 5

1. Download the iOS 5 IPSW file from the web (it’s easy and readily available. Just Google it and torrent it down).
2. Update your iPhone using iTunes. To do this, connect your iPhone to your computer, click on the Check for Update button with theOption (Mac) or Shift (PC) key pressed. Select the iOS 5 IPSW file from the place you downloaded it to.
3. Wait until it upgrades. A new activation screen will appear.

Activate iOS 5

1. Triple click the home button. This will activate the Voice Over.
2. Triple click the home button and Emergency Call will appear.
3. Click on Emergency Call and, while it’s switching, swipe with your three fingers down.
4. The Notification Center will appear!
5. Click on the Weather widget. The Weather app will load.
6. Click on the home button to exit to the iPhone’s springboard.

We haven’t verified this, but it’s a very interesting workaround I never thought could happen. If you dare to try this, let us know how it works for you. It’s noted that Apple can easily shut down this loophole and render your iPhone useless, so be warned.

Don’t forget to check out our exclusive iOS 5 Beta hands on, and our WWDC 2011 iOS 5/iCloud Round Up.

But you would need to do this with every iOS 5 beta update right? And what would happen if Apple fixes this method? Restore to 4.x? Hope you backed up your shsh!

  • There’s one at Gizmodo.

  • This is a very risky workaround, and I’m sure Apple could impose its will on unauthorized devices. It might be fun to ‘test’ on a secondary device just for kicks though.

Hope you like your new Apple Brick.  You can’t go back once you update the O/S. I’m a Developer and I can’t even go back and I updated to iOS 5 the legal way.  Still, I know someone’s going to try this so let us know how it goes.  *snicker*

  • I’m getting really tempted to just shell $99 for a developer account to get access to this. It’s like spending $99 for pretty much a new phone, and there’s just so many new things in this upgrade.

Not on my work’s test iPhone, no.  I have them saved on my personal phone though.  I have no idea how to use them to restore my iPhone to a previous O/S though.  Can’t seem to find a decent tutorial for that.

  • You have to restore instead of upgrading… After that, you can restore your backup when iTunes ask you if you want to configure it as a new phone or restore a backup…

I did this on my iPhone 4 and 3Gs… And it’s working fine

BUT…does that mean for subsequent BETA’s I have to keep paying/applying/(insert terminology here)

If you bought it factory unlocked or your carrier unlocked it for you using their own services then your unlock remains.

If you are jailbroken and unlocked with ultrasnow then you will lose this unlock.

yes, the fact that it’s BETA 1, and clearly not stable for public release. its cool to do this to try it, or to develop compatible apps, but i wouldnt do it for the sole purpose of “having a new phone”.

The Developer kit allows you to create iPhone/iPad Apps and test them in the iPhone/iPad simulator on your Mac.  You can’t use the developer kit on a PC. It also allows you to register your devices as development units in Xcode. You can’t activate an iPhone with a beta O/S on it if it isn’t registered in Xcode as a development unit with Apple.  At least that’s my experience.  I got tired of skulking around eBay and torrent sites for cracked access to stuff ages ago.  Now it’s just easier to go the legal route.

Yes. It’s very simple. I went up to 5 last night but had an issue with my UDID no longer being registered. I installed Itunes 10.5 and then restored selecting the 4.3.3. ipsw file. It took a while but it was absolutely fine. I would certainly backup your iphone before you start.

Keep in mind that the iOS betas have expiry dates on them. If you were to bypass the whole UDID registration at some point the iDevice would get locked up unless you update and I’m sure apple will block this confusing key bashing method. You will have to update to beta 2 or 3 in the future and if this doesn’t work you could be screwed as Apple could also make it harder to downgrade on future betas too.

well as a brave soul i said what the hell no guts no glory
i downloaded ios 5 – also itunes 64 bit for windows 7 – restored just fine
i could not replicate the video on gizmodo – when i triple click in the home screen while its locked nothing happens- but after sliding it open i was prompted for step by step activation over the air – with no luck i used itunes 10.5 to revert back to 4.3.3 with no problems at all.  if anyone managed to get it to work let me know. the $99 temptation is getting stronger.

Do a shift + restore and select 5.0 beta – it’ll wipe your phone but start up in 5.0. You can do the above trick to get past the activation but in my experience its pretty pointless, most things didnt work as the OS isnt properly activated (e.g. even youtube didnt work and I had wifi at the time) and I had a lot of trouble getting back to 4.3.3, only way to do it was to do a shift + restore back to the downloaded 4.3.3. OS but had to do it on itunes 10.3 – doing it on 10.5 gave an error. More trouble than its worth – wait until september.
