Apparently Taylor Swift has shaken it off, forgotten her bad blood, and is getting back together with a few of her famous exes, including Spotify and Pandora.
According to a new report from TechCrunch, the “Shake It Off” singer’s entire music catalog — including her Grammy album of the year-winning 1989 — returned to popular streaming service Spotify Friday, as well as all other streaming platforms including Amazon Music. Swift had previously pulled all her music from Spotify in 2014.
“In celebration of ‘1989’ selling over 10 million albums worldwide and the RIAA’s 100 Million Song Certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services tonight at midnight,” Swift’s representative said in a statement.
“The move by one of streaming’s biggest holdouts could signal a sea change in how artists view the technology that’s been criticized for underpaying content creators,” reads TechCrunch‘s report. “As Spotify recently hit 50 million paid subscribers and Apple Music now has 27 million, the payouts are growing and starting to make up for the massive decline in physical record sales.”
Swift removed her entire back catalog from Spotify’s archives three years ago, citing Spotify’s low royalties and refusal to make certain songs more expensive to access than others. “I think that people should feel that there is a value to what musicians have created, and that’s that,” Swift told Time in 2014.
In an interview with Yahoo at the time, Swift explained that she was “not willing to contribute my life’s work to an experiment that I don’t feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music.” She doubled down on her criticism in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2015, branding Spotify a “startup with no cash flow.”
