The iPhone is Coming to Canada this Summer…

…or is it? Did you get a chance to check out my first post previewing iPhone 2.0 and its features?

Well, the community at ModMyiFone.com has posted an in depth video (6 mins) of the jailbroken iPhone 2.0 (or in other words, an iPhone with 1.2 firmware, only available to official SDK developers). However, at the 3 minute and 52 second mark of the video, something interesting is shown…

Could the iPhone be Coming to Canada in June?

As the user is scrolling through the list of International language support for the keyboard, you will notice French and French (Canada). Could this be evidence that the iPhone will be indeed released in Canada once summer rolls around? I’m not one to fuel rumors (but oh man, it’s so fun to do so!), but the specific inclusion of French for French Canadians seems like a subtle hint of things to come.

Don’t forget that 30 applicants that will soon be bidding on Canada’s wireless spectrum. Maybe a mystery company will launch the iPhone in Canada. What do you think? iPhone coming soon from Rogers possibly? All I can say is I can’t wait until there is another GSM carrier in Canada. Let the data rates fall soon after hopefully!

  • I hope T-Mobile sets up shop here. I think the french canada thing is just some international support for all languages and not a hint.

When the iPhone comes to Canada, if it comes to the carrier you are currently using, will you be able to switch your unlocked iPhone to be “locked” into the Canadian carrier, so you can download updates with no problem, use visual voice mail, etc?

I agree with Tyler… I think it’s just support for all languages. Otherwise, you could say that it’s being released in every country represented by the languages shown on that screen! Can you imaging those people in all those other countries getting hyped up like we are over the possibility ๐Ÿ˜€ Again, it’s gotta be seen to be believed!

Some nice looking features in v2. Great to see that ZiPhone is ready for it already. It would be pure torture not to be able to keep updating ๐Ÿ™‚

wow thats the biggest hint ever, it even says Pakistan in regions in v1.2, does it mean apple will release it for them too? no its a joke, bottom line is, its just a support and not an evidence enough to predict that iphone is coming to canada. It would be nice to know that iphone is in canada but with only Rogers and Fido as GSM monopoly and no other competition, they do not really need iphone to crank up their revenues, they are already a monopoly!!!

I remember hearing something about Apple not being able to sell the phone here because a company in Eastern Canada owns the trademark name “iPhone”.

But I too agree with Tyler in that its likely just language support. As Tim said, “Otherwise, you could say that itร‚โ€™s being released in every country represented by the languages shown on that screen!”. While possible, it is unlikely. Maybe some US citizens travel to Canada and use the French (Canada) setting? Who knows.

Unfortunately even when the iPhone does come to Canada it probably will be on a sucky carrier like Rogers. Why not just through your money down the drain or mail it to me! There service sucks, they cost a fortune to use any wireless web one. It would be so nice if the wireless industry in Canada could get some real competition and let people use what ever phone they want on whatever carrier they want.

    From Wikipedia

The United States does not have an official language, but English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language

The Spanish language is the second-most common language in the country, spoken by almost 30 million people (or 12% of the population) in 2005.

It would make sense to see Spanish options on the iPhone but they aren’t there… not that it matters to me I speak Canadian English. I just noticed this when I was preparing for a trip to Mexico.

I don’t consider this any indication that it is coming to Canada (unless you see reference to an actual carrier). Rather, it’s more about Apple supporting existing customers who may be French Canadian since they can live in the US or abroad where the iPhone is officially available. This is also evolutionary and expected for better localization.

Regardless, I think it’s inevitable that the iPhone will appear here. Of course, there must be a priority list (for whatever reason) of which languages to support and it is promising to see Canadian French on the top of that list since I’m assuming the largest concentration of French Canadians are actually here in Canada.

Yep, its now official. Ted Rogers himself said it, Rogers and Apple have reached a deal. Now its just a matter of launch date. The Iphone could be coming very soon. This is no rumour now. Rogers stock has just climbed over this news. As for competition, dont expect any U.S carrier to compete for Canadian wireless spectrum. They are just not interested. So being the only gsm carrier, it looks like Rogers will be the only company to reep the benefits of this product. As a shareholder of this company, I am very happy. For those of you who complain about data prices in canada, you can also blame Bell and Telus for not being so competitive. Nobody is standing in there way not to switch to GSM. They could invest if they wanted to. But maybe they dont care about delivering leading wireless products and services. They have other things to worry about. Perhaps, home phone, which right now they are taking a hit for it.
