Yorkdale Apple Store’s Newer and Larger Location Revealed [FLOOR PLANS]

If you have ever been to Canada’s first Apple Store (especially on a weekend) you know that place turns into a sauna and getting to the back of the store can take up to 10 minutes.

Okay, I’m exaggerating a tad, but if you have been there, you know exactly what I’m trying to get at.

Whispers of an Apple store expansion have been floating around the Urban Toronto forums since Yorkdale announced its latest round of expansions, last year.

But this updated mall floor plan posted on the Oxford Properties website now confirms that the Apple store is moving into the new wing, and should be open once the renovations are complete, sometime in the Fall. The new location will be southwest of the current location, as seen below:

Apple is tripling their space to 9,830 sq. feet.  The original Apple store is 3,539 sq. feet. Interestingly, the Microsoft store is opening (first rumoured in February) two stores down from Apple.

There is a space that is between Apple and Microsoft that does not yet have a tenant, a perfect space for Samsung’s first Canadian store.

Do you welcome the Apple store expansion, or should Apple have just opened more stores in other malls?

Update 1: Looks like Oxford Properties has replaced the floor plans we posted about with an older version that does not show the new mall expansion.

Their running out of big malls to open Apple Store. An expansion is highly needed for the busy store anyways.

Saskatoon desperately needs an Apple store, the only province without an Apple store is Saskatchewan.

I’d like to see them open one in Barrie, Ontario.  A 2 hour drive to Toronto just isn’t convenient.  Barrie is much closer for travelling to for me.

They got one in Newmarket, ON, Upper Canada Mall

“Do you welcome the Apple store expansion, or should Apple have just opened more stores in other malls?”
Gee, what a dumb question.  What do you think people will say?  People that live far from Yorkdale will say “wahhhhhh they should open a store in Nunavut” and people that use the Yorkdale store will welcome the expansion.Fortunately Apple isn’t so naive, they go where the population centers are and Yorkdale is one of the busiest malls in the country.

The one at Toronto’s Eaton Centre needs a similar upgrade. A ‘destination’ mall, the place is packed out (and under-ventilated) at the best of times. Might suggest either the current location of Harry Rosen or Shoppers Drug (both moving) or, perhaps better yet, replace by building one of their glass cubes just up the street at Yonge & Gould, next to Ryerson.

Whatever the case, if Apple is serious at encouraging business people (and those truly interested in buying a computer or iPad) to move to their products, Apple needs to look seriously at devoting a separate space/room and their Business Specialists to that – especially in downtown Toronto, so close to the business district. Lots of these types may be interested in the product but aren’t going to spend the energy and time to compete for access with packs of pimply teens and street folk checking their email or Facebook status.

Saskatchewan is almost the only province without a store.  Along with PEI, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

According to Wikipedia, Yorkdale Mall gets about 400,000 customers PER WEEK. They get more customers in a month than the entire population of Sask., PEI, NB, or NF.
