Hello NBC Olympics App, Good Bye CTVOlympics.ca

Leading up the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, we reviewed two must-have apps for the iPhone: the official 2010Guide and CTVOlympics.ca. Both of these apps do an excellent job that helps you keep track of the games.

CTVOlympics.ca iPhone App Reduces Features With Updates (No Medal Breakdowns)

With the first couple of updates to the CTVOlympics.ca app, I soon discovered that the MEDAL COUNT feature was now only available to the $1.99 Pro version (which also includes Push Notifications). CTV removed the medal count breakdowns, and made it only available to the upgrade version! I understand the reason for a paid version, but to have an essential feature removed in the free version is cruel.

Hello NBC Olympics iPhone App

There’s another solution for those Olympic junkies out there. It’s the NBC Olympics iPhone app, which is free and is loaded with features, including Push Notifications. It has the medal count breakdown, TV schedule, news, twitter feeds, and more. Features not available to non-US residents are the video highlights.

You can set which sports you want notifications for, and included is a breakdown of what sport countries won their medals in. You can also select what alerts you want for each sport. Definitely a great replacement for the CTVOlympics.ca app.

Let me know if you like the NBC Olympics app. I think it’s pretty good considering it’s free! GO CANADA GO!

  • I just upgraded and I stlll see medal counts in the free version?

  • Whoops, you're right. Revised the article to reflect the lack of medal breakdowns and Push Notifications in the CTVOlympics.ca app.

  • I'd get the updated 2010 Olympics app as it now has the medal count by country and drill down to what sports those medals were won in. You can have favourite you events for the day as well, but I don't think you get push notifications yet for the 2010 app.

I haven't paid for anything on the ctv app and I can see the medals and the breakdown. What has not worked so far is the push notification but it did ask “permission” to send them so maybe I will get some today. The NBC app on the other hand does send push but you have to choose the event not just the country.

I just use them both and get most of the news I need.

I've been using the NBC App and the Official 2010 Guide on my iPhone since I saw your review on Dot Com Pho. I really like the NBC app, although I would like it better if there was a quicker way to get the total medal count.

DO NOT buy the CTV app. I am really into the olympics and have 3 different olympic apps to find the best one. I purchased the Upgrade to the premium for CTV's app and it blows. The push notifications do not work. I have recieved ONE since their update that was suppose to fix the problems and the notifications only tell the gold, silver and bronze for each even. Nothing about qualifications, quarter or semi finals. For an app that is only good for 2 weeks I'm really unhappy I spent the 1.99. Feel I have been screwed at this point.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I've always wondered how well the $1.99
upgrade performed. Now we know! 2010Guide + NBC makes for a great combo.

I have actually gone and emailed Apple requesting a refund because the paid upgrade is a waste of money. 2010 Guide + NBC it is! GO CANADA!

I have no complaints about the free CTV app. I see themedal standings and can drill down to which events. I haven't gotten any push notifications since the weekend but I don't think that's a big deal. I mostly use the daily results display which tells me the schedule and results. I'd like it to tell me which channel which event is on but I appreciate that they move events from one channel to another depending on the progress of the events (ie long track speed skating rant long so some other event (figures?) was moved.

No complaints about the free CTV app at all!

  • Nice. Their App Store support is really good and I'm sure they'll
    offer a refund!

How come nobody's brought up the Bell 2010 app? It doesn't do push notifications, but as a viewing companion, I like it better than the NBC one. And its Venue tracking is second to none.

  • It's already been reviewed on the blog. Link within article. It's a
    great app!
